Wanted: Info on neighborhoods/areas for project.

So, I'm doing an urban design project at school where we are supposed to choose a neighborhood or area in a city and give it a redesign. I already have a few ideas and 'hoods churning in my head, but I thought some of the Nesties may give some different perspectives which is always a good thing. So, here's my question for you all.

Which neighborhood in Austin do you think needs a redesign or revamping, and why?

Thanks in advance for any ideas you may give me from this thread. :)

Re: Wanted: Info on neighborhoods/areas for project.

  • hmm... that's a tough one.  there's an area in east austin (around 12th/oak springs/airport) that could really use a facelift.  there are a lot of nice parks in the area that are currently being overrun by drugs and prostitutes.  east austin is starting to go through some gentrification anyway, and i'm sure this will be the next area to be addressed, but it really could use it.  we've got a lot of great green space there that is nearly unusable.

if you'd like to redesign my neighborhood (old enfield) to have some sidewalks and some one-way streets/cul-de-sacs to reduce all the cut-through traffic, that'd be great too!  =)  with all the historic homes here, i don't think there's much else that could be done, but man would sidewalks be nice!

  • Clarksville/Old Enfield is actually one area that I'm looking into. It's beautiful and the strip of West Lynn with shopping/restaurants is great, but the upkeep has been slightly neglected. Easily one of my fave areas of Austin, though.

I had considered east Austin, but because it IS going through so much right now, I don't know if I could make a judgment call on an unfinished product, if that makes any sense. I do like some of the things I've been seeing there, especially on 11th.
