swats in school?

I guess I thought this surely would have been banned by now.

My dad and his wife are raising her grandson. I think he is 10 or so. They live in a small town that can be a little ghetto- Coolidge, Tx. They are older so they don't teach him to fight back to defend himself. Anyways, this little boy punched him in the stomach on the playground last week and when they got back inside- spit water on him and punched him in the head twice. The other kid is a trouble maker and has since been expelled for peeing on another kids jacket.

Well my nephew finally pushed him off of him after he hit him in the head and they both got sent to the office for fighting. My nephew was to be given 1 swat and when he refused it turned into 3 swats. Not sure what the other kid got. The principal is a couple of years older than me- I went to high school with him...he's a country boy and played football so he's no wuss. Well...nephew got his 3 swats on Friday and when I talked to my step-mom yesterday his butt was still bruised. Your thoughts?

I'm disturbed by this... They did take the matter to their attorney in town but I'm afraid that small town politics may take over and nothing will really happen.

Re: swats in school?

  • By swats do you mean licks?  As in spankings?  I thought you couldn't do that without parental consent?

They were allowed when I was teaching 10+ years ago (man, I feel old now).  At that school, parents/guardians could object in writing with the office to keep their child from being subject to swats.  If the parents didn't opt out, then they were available as a punishment.

    Seriously?! Wow.

If anything, swats should be an opt-in program NOT an opt-out. That just sounds crazy to me! I would lose my freaking mind if I found out anyone swatted my daughter. Lose. My. Mind. And I would certainly not enroll her any school that felt like swats were an acceptable form of punishment.

  • If there are bruises, then CPS needs to be contacted.  It is not ok to spank a child so hard that you leave bruises on their body.

Ditto this! Sounds like this punishment went way overboard.

  • the way i understand it, corporal punishment is allowed in this state, and it's up to the district as to whether or not its a discipline choice.  in districts that do practice corporal punishment, parents must sign a form if they do not want their child disciplined in this way.  did your parents sign a form?

i wonder what this school/district's policy is on bullying, which is what that other kid is doing.

  • Temple ISD brought back corporal punishment this year, so I'm not surprised by it.

I don't agree with it at all and I would be raising hell if my kid was spanked at school.  Luckily, we're Belton ISD so its not an issue :)

  • I think they did sign the waiver saying that he could get swats (which I would not do)...but bruises?? really?
  • yeah, the only part i'm concerned about is the bruising.  If parents aren't 'allowed' to leave bruises on kids, then schools certainly shouldn't be either.

My school (public school in Indiana) also did spankings.  A bunch of seniors (yes, I said SENIORS) got caught doing senior skip day during my junior year.  Everyone that was caught had to get spankings (we're talking 18-year olds!), including the principal's daughter.  Surprise

  • I went to high school my sophomore year in Wall TX outside of San Angelo, licks were allowed. You got licks if you failed to turn in your homework a second time. I learned that the hard way, but never forgot to do my homework after that.

Everyone has their own beliefs with spanking. I think the bruising part is unacceptable.

Triple ditto this.  They need to take pics and contact CPS as pp said.  I believe (but I could be wrong) that if someone else were to see the bruises your parents could actually get in trouble.  TexanSarah could probably tell you for sure.  You might page her and see what she says.  GL, this situation sucks!

  • When I was a kid in the Nevada school system, swats were allowed, but the parental units were called before that for 'clearance'. Many teachers usually saved swats for very insubordinate behavior like physical bullying toward other kids. However, nobody ever swatted a kid so hard they bruised. There is something wrong when this type of punishment, especially in a school setting, gets to the level of bruising or leaving marks.

ditto all of the above. when i taught in hutto, they allowed spanking with parent consent. i don't think they ever actually had to spank anyone at my school - just knowing that they could was enough to keep most of the kids in line! it was fabulous.

you have to remember that there are some kids who don't care about any consequence other than spanks. that's what they're used to at home. when i was a kid our school spanked. but i wasn't ever spanked. my husband was, and i have no doubt he deserved it! ha! i think as long as the person doing the discipline is using it as a last resort, it can be very effective.

i could change my mind on this when my kids are in school, but right now i think it's a good thing (again, only if the kid really deserved such an extreme consequence).

  • i'm pretty sure that corporal punishment was allowed all through my school-age years.  i know it was in elementary because my dad told me that the assistant principal had a spanking machine in his office.  the idea of that fictional contraption was more than enough to keep me in line!

i was "paddled" in 2nd grade; i put that in quotes because the teacher barely touched me with it.  but it did happen in front of the class, and the humiliation of that made me think about my actions.  it didn't have any long term effects on me, and i don't resent that it happened or anything.  looking back, especially from my viewpoint of a current teacher, i can see why it happened.  i wouldn't shut the he!! up and stop talking to my desk neighbor, Patrick, who also got paddled.

actually, i'm glad our school doesn't paddle; i couldn't do it!!  (although i sure wish more parents laid down the law, though.)
