Anybody use a lawn service?
Is it something you'd recommend? We're thinking about hiring a company to do one of those 5 application lawn treatment deals that gets rid of weeds and is supposed to make your lawn more lush, but we're on the fence. Our side lawn especially has lots of weeds, but the back and front are okay (not great, but okay). It's $179. What do you think?

I have spent that last 2 weeks digging thistles out of the flower beds in our backyard. I half-filled a yard bag with those biznitches. But thistle seeds are in bird feed?
Personally, I wouldn't use a lawn service because it would feel like an expense to upkeep. I've just been digging the weeds out myself--but I don't have results yet on how bad they come back. But, with a baby on the way, I would probably do it if I were you.
Oh yeah... I never knew this until MIL was filling her bird feeders one day (she has 8 or something ridiculous) and she was saying how thistle seeds attract some type of bird (maybe a gold finch?) and then I looked at the seed bags and made the connection between the amount of thistles in her yard. Then I asked my neighbor who has several bird feeders what kind they used, she also likes the thistle seeds. So frustrating. They grow in like 5 minutes and are a biitch to dig out.

I couldn't figure out why so many thistle were growing by the fence, but precious seller had a bird feeder in the yard. I bet she used bird seed that had thistle seed, and the birds would eat the bird seed and then fly over to the fence to rest, and that's where seeds got dropped.
I had no idea that weed seeds were included in bird seed!!!!
And agreed, thistle is awful to dig out. I got so many pricks from those dam leaves.
Our yard is covered in weeds right now...front and back. I used TruGreen Chemlawn a few years ago for 1-2 years and it did a good job, but there were certain broad leaf weeds that they wouldn't automatically take care of and it drove me nuts.
I ended up cancelling with TruGreen and we just started up using Turf Doctor (which I think is local to Alabama). They cover all weeds and will come back and do spot treatments when needed too. It is $40/treatment (for our front lawn only) and they do 8 treatments per year. We've only had one treatment so far, and it has already killed a ton of weeds!
We would get it in the back yard too because our lawn looks like a jungle back there, but I don't want to have to deal with locking up our Labs every time they come to treat the lawn...and I'm always skeptical of chemicals around animals.
Overall, I would say it is worth it since it reduces mowing time (because our weeds grow way faster than our grass) and it will make it look nicer without all the weeds...but I'd just recommend making sure they cover all weeds and not just specific types.
We've been using True Green. We wait and hold off before signing b/c they will price match others and tend to give us a better deal at the end. They spray and airrate (spt) the yard.
I used to have a bird feeder but never noticed thisle growing in our backyard from it. Maybe the damn gold finches in MN eat it all up!
I dont' know if this'll help, but I'll tell you what we do.
We do use a lawn service and they come every other Tuesday and mow/edge/etc the front and back lawns. We pay $70 a month, and we have a very large yard. Our particular lawn guy doesn't use any chemicals (you have to have a special license in the state of CA -- stupid!), so he doesn't (read: can't) spray anything for weeds. The weeds that come up with our regular grass gets mowed over with the grass every other week, so we really don't notice it. A day or two before he's scheduled to come, you can start to tell where the weeds are coming up amongst the grass, but it's not enough to warrant special treatment).
The rest of our yard -- rock beds, mulch areas, etc -- I do myself. In total I've spent a few minutes spraying Round Up, and a few hours pulling up weeds a week later. It wasn't too bad at all.
We just started using TruGreen and have only had one treatment done so far, but I can already see that it killed off a bunch of the weeds. We decided to go with a lawn service because we priced out how much it would be for us to get the fertilizer/ weed killer ourselves and the price was pretty much equal. We decided that it was worth it to have someone else mess with the chemicals.
Ours are $50/treatment and they do 8 treatments a year. I like that they know when to come out and spray for different things and I don't have to worry about timing things myself.
