MH's birthday is the middle of this month and I wanted to do something beer related. He is so difficult to come up with things for - I have no idea what I will do next year.
I have been googling. Apparently, you can take a tour at Sam Adams and sample some beers - they don't take reservations. It's first come, first served
At Barleycorn's in Natick, you can actually go through the entire process of brewing your own beer, making a custom lab and then you come back 2 weeks later to pick it up.
Sam Adams is free and Barley costs between $150 - $200. Hopefully, I would only have to pay for MH since I don't need to brew beer (not for $150 - $200, at least!).
What do you guys think? Is brewing your own beer (and getting to take home 6 - 7 cases of it) worth the price?
TIA for any thoughts! MH is so good at coming up with surprises for me and I just suck - hoping to hit out of the park this year, though! :-)
Re: Breweries in Boston?
I second Mrs. C. Sam and Harpoon are right down the street from one another and you could make it a day. I used to go to the Harpoon Fests every year and they're amazing as well! They have a list of the upcoiming fests and that might be fun for you guys to do. They usually do a summer fest, oktoberfest and St. Patty's Day.
Good luck!
I went to Sam Adams about a month ago and it was fun. It was on a Saturday and it was really crowded but we just had to stand in line for a bit to get a ticket for the tour and they told us what time it started. There are several little restaurants around where you can grab a bite to eat while you wait.
But, if you think he'll have more fun brewing his own (and 6-7 cases is a lot for 200 bucks, IMO), I'd go for that option. GL!
Sam and Harpoon are a lot of fun, Harpoon only does free tastings during the week and $5 tours (w/ a tasting) on the weekends so that's something to be mindful of. Also, at Harpoon they sell "Growlers" which are essentially 64 oz. jugs and they fill them with beer on tap from the brewery. They have about 8-10 different beers on tap at any given time, many of which aren't sold outside the brewery.
My DH enjoys home brewing, but started small which could be the way to go for you, I'd rec the Mr. Beer home brewing kit, I think they start around $50.
Or you could get him a beer of the month subscription, our groomsmen all chipped in and gifted us with one as our wedding gift, and it was a nice gift, we received a case of beer from different independent and microbreweries from all over the country.
I thought that both Sam and Harpoon were fun (though unless I am mixed up, they weren't right down the street from each other), but for a birthday gift the other experience sounds pretty cool! It might not be as fun though if your husband has to do it alone.
Beer of the month subscription is a good idea, Buckey!
