PSA: Charlotte Dog Parks - Aggressive Dog Alert

Today, my husband and I were at Frazier Park with our dog.  There was a tall (probably 6'2), black, probably in his mid 20-early 30s, fit and fairly good-looking guy there with his dog, a speckled mastiff who is not neutered, is about 16 months and 130lbs.  The guy also has 2 boxers (I believe they're speckled as well) and always wears athletic clothes.

His mastiff attacked a small dog right in the park (the small dog actually died while en route to the vet) while my husband, another guy and the owner all tried to intervene, to no avail.  The small dog did nothing to provoke the attack except for enter the park.

The attacker's owner gave a false name and number to the poor woman who saw her dog dying right in front of her and then fled the park.  We have all filed reports with the parks and recreation board as well as with the police, but since he gave out false information, there's very little that they can do unless someone sees him or has his contact information.

Please, if you see this guy, call someone.  Although I didn't see it, his dog attacked another dog a few days ago, as well.  I doubt he'll be stupid enough to come back to Frazier Park, but he has 3 high-energy dogs, so he might try to go somewhere else with them.  Most importantly, be careful.

ETA:  Here is a photo of a dog with similar coloring to the one who attacked the small dog.

Re: PSA: Charlotte Dog Parks - Aggressive Dog Alert

  • Thanks for the heads up.  There are a few of us who frequent the dog parks.
  • what an awful story! I hope he gets caught!
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • that is awful! we go to that park frequently- I would be beside myself if something like that happened in front of me or to my dogs!!

  • Wow!  That's just horrible!! There's definitely something not right about that guy too, if he didn't try to stop his dogs from attacking or intervening.  Almost as if he was "training" that dog to kill.  Some people are just effed up--I hope they find him and somehow find a way to punish him.

My husband had that dog by the neck, another guy was hitting the dog in the head trying to get him to drop the other dog, and the owner was pulling his hind legs out from under him, so he was at least trying to do something.  But still, the fact that he gave a fake name and number and then left shows that, at the heart of it, he doesn't think he should be on the hook for what his dog did.

He knew that he has an aggressive dog and even said about 5 minutes before his dog attacked, "Yeah.  He's aggressive, but he's never bitten anyone."  If you know that you have an aggressive dog, then why are you bringing him to the park?  His dog was clipped to his leash, but the owner wasn't on the other end of the leash, so there went another chance to reel him in and prevent the attack.

Basically, if they find him now, it will be a misdemeanor because he gave false information.

  • There is going to be a story on this in the Charlotte Observer tomorrow in the local section.  Also, the boxers' names are Onyx and Nitro if anyone thinks they might have seen them.
  • How awful!!!!!!!! The little terrier was so cute :(  (the article is up on the front page of the Observer right now, you were quoted in there also)
  • it makes me sad that an asshat guy like that is causing people to get in an uproar over what they think are 'agressive breeds'. i believe its a rule that you can only bring neutered dogs in. and i've seen intact males cause lots of problems at other parks. its not a good combo at all.

i saw this on the news though and wasn't it a Yorkie that got attacked? why wouldn't they have their Yorkie on the small dog side of the fence? not saying its their fault, but i think the small & big areas are there for a reason too.

ETA: just to clear up, i'm really sorry for the Yorkie and owners. and its not their fault. its clearly a dog w/ a problem and an owner that is an idiot to bring his dog there. i saw something on the news last night that talked about banning certain breeds from the parks and that made me upset though b/c i don't think there are bad breeds, only bad dogs (specific dogs) and owners.

  • That's so sad :(

However, I do think small dogs should be kept on the small dog side of the park.  As an owner of a dog who has a great time with large dogs but doesn't like small dogs, it isn't fair to people following the rules. If I see small dogs on the large dog side, I don't bring Bobo in.

Also, most parks have a rule about dogs being fixed and it makes me very angry when someone brings in a dog that isn't neutered.  You can physically see the difference in how the other dogs react to it.

I hope they find this guy.  If he doesn't have his large dog properly trained, he doesn't need to own it.

Edit: sorry, fixed a typo that annoyed me.

  • How sad. It always drives me nuts when I see dogs behave in a repeatedly aggressive pattern and the owners don't seem to see it as a sign that they just aren't suited for the dog park.
  • At our park, a guy had a muzzled dog and said he was required to keep him muzzled since he attacks other dogs.  Why did he even bring him to the dog park?  It growled and made the other dogs anxious, then tried to bite through the muzzle several times.  People amaze me.

  • I would have been in horror had I seen this in front of me. We loved going to the uptown dog park, but I think we'll just stick with backyard GTGs and long walks. I own a yorkie and boxer and often have to be on one side (small pups or large pups side of the fence). Regardless of the breed, people who let their dogs be agressive and not get them fixed should not bring them to parks.

I also can't believe this guy gave false information. What a complete dirtbag. I will be keeping an eye for him around the hood for sure. Just sad for the owners who had to deal with this.

  • The owner of the dog that was attacked had a large and a small dog with her.  Since you can't bring large dogs into the small dog park, most people who have two dogs of differing sizes bring the small dog into the big dog park.  I guess their theory is that their small dog is accustomed to large dogs.  While it's probably ill-advised, she didn't do anything that loads of others haven't and her intent was not malicious.  He, on the other hand, supplied a fake number, only gave them his first name, and would have gone on being unknown had people not been determined to see him held accountable for this.

This guy is now on the news saying that his dog confused the Yorkie with his favorite toy.  As a witness to the entire attack and the guy's behavior both before and after the incident, I never once saw the toy bear that he's now saying was there.  It wasn't at the park and he didn't leave with it.  He's trying to back track.  Also, his little bit about the phone number being one digit different, how many of us have used that same trick with a guy at a bar?  That's how you give a fake number without looking like you're trying to do it.

We're responsible for the dog that we bring every time we enter the park, whether they belong to us or not.  At the time, he was Mr. Apologetic, saying how he would take care of everything for them (my husband heard that part).  Ok, even if she shouldn't have brought her small dog into the large side, what are you going to do about it?  You said you'd do anything and you felt so awful about the whole thing...prove it.

As far as the neutering goes, as the rules are currently written, only unspayed females in heat are forbidden from entering the park.  That leaves room for unaltered males, like his, to come in.
