South Austin Bike Routes

So, I just bought a new road bike last week and I have yet to really ride it because I don't know of any good routes in South Austin where I can go without getting smashed by a car. Not to mention, I am still trying to get used to my clip in pedals (I've already fallen off once unable to get out :)

I live off of S 1st and Slaughter, so any recommendations within a few miles would be appreciated. I am open to other areas of town as well, but it would be nice to just leave directly from my house and take off for 20 miles or so.

Thanks!

Re: South Austin Bike Routes

  • Hi there!

I do have a couple of suggestions.. there is always The Veloway, which is a 3 mile loop - definitely good for beginners to learn navigation and clipping in and out.  That's just past Slaughter down Mopac.

Then there is the 8 mile loop that takes off FROM the Veloway, south on Mopac to the end of the road and back.

I've been wanting to try this one from s 1st, but not on my own!

Also, you can search mapmyride.com for stuff going from your street.  People post stuff from their neighborhoods all the time.

Oh, and of course - Jack and Adam's and Bicycle Sport Shop do rides.. J&A's on Sundays for beginners, and I think BSS does Saturday.  Mellow Johnny's also has a ladies' ride on Mondays I believe?  I have been wanting to do it but haven't gotten around to it.

  • Have you tried the Veloway in Circle C yet?  Definitely wouldn't recommend riding there from your house if you're still getting use to your clips though.  But it's a fun short little loop.

  • I used to commute by bike when we still lived in Austin.   We lived near Circle C and I worked up at 183 & 35, so I'm pretty sure I biked near your neighborhood on my way to work and back.   I found this map very helpful when planning my commuting route, and even just when I felt like getting out for a ride.  There are plenty of neighborhood streets that are bikeable in Austin, and plenty of ways out of town for a more rural ride too.

As far as clipping in and out, do you have a big empty parking lot near you where you can practice?  Just do it over and over and over again.  It'll be second-nature in no time.

    Enjoy that new bike! :)

  • Thanks for the recommendations. I think I'm going to check out the Veloway on Saturday.
