Hi Austin nesties! FH and I have been extensively looking into moving down to Austin at the end of the year. We currently live in Grand Rapids, MI and have lived in Michigan our whole lives. I have been doing my research like crazy at all different kinds of places across the country and Austin just seems to fit what we are looking for. The idea of going through another lake effect winter here kills me. So really I'm just looking for opinions on the city and where the best places to live are? Thanks so much!!
Re: Moving
some advice from someone who moved to austin from out of state:
1) have you looked into jobs? I was pretty shocked to see the salary level compared to where we lived before.
2) traffic isn't great here (like most metro areas) so it would be better to live closer to where you'll work. the light-rail train recently started operating so if you do end up working downtown, you could easily live further away without having to deal with the traffic. cap metro has more info - www.capmetro.org
3) although we don't have crazy snow here, be prepared for crazy hot summers - hopefully you like the heat! if we were to do it again, I'd definitely look for a house (or apt) with a community pool.
GL! austin really is a great place to live.
Ditto all this. And as to number 3, I'm actually moving to Austin to get away from the heat. Never thought I'd say that. It's 98 here again today in Laredo. Shoot me now.
oh gawd. H+P to you!
I've been commuting to houston and I definitely notice the difference, humidity-wise. I feel like a sticky mess when I walk outside. gross.
I'll chime in that there are a ton of Michiganders down here . . . due to the tech industry recruiting heavily at MSU and UofM. If you guys went to either of those schools, you'll feel right at home - they've got game watching parties at some of the local bars for all of the big 10 games.
hey risa - not trying to stir the pot or anything, but it seems you only really post to advertise your site. I know there are other nesties who own their own businesses, but you seem to push yours more than others. or maybe I'm the only one who's noticed.
Hey there! I'm sure you've already thought about this, but I thought I'd agree with a pp who suggested you make sure you have a job here before you make the move. People tend to think of Austin as this growing tech-utopia but the fact of the matter is that LOTS of companies are going through hiring freezes right now.
Once you have a job offer lined up it will be a lot easier to decide where you want to live, Austin traffic isn't the worst in the world but it can be a bummer if you live on the opposite side of town from your work. In general, north Austin is more affordable and west Austin is more fancy pants, but there are few places in Austin where you CAN'T find something you love in your price range.
HTH!
Sometimes I pin stuff
In her defense... she just posted yesterday for something not Realtor related ( http://tinyurl.com/ycxfl24 ) and I could be wrong but I think there have been a lot of moving type posts lately with the $8000 tax credit ending April 30, which I also imagine is keeping her very busy from posting the boards. We got married around the same time last year and I know she was on theknot all the time.
ETA: To the OP: I agree with others, get a job first. Also decide if you want the city-city life or if you want more outside the city. I personal would not live in downtown Austin if my life depended on it. But me, I like to avoid traffic at all costs and a little more country life. You can look at outlying cities (Pflugerville, Round Rock, Hutto, Cedar Park, Buda, and Kyle) and still work somewhere close to the middle of the city. A job would help you find a location.
