I want to get involved in yoga, but I don't know much about it. Is it something I can teach myself, or even get a video? Or is it better to take a class before trying on my own?
Back pain/problems run on my dad's side of the family. He had back surgery when he was 36-37 (slipped disk). I'm already starting to have back pain myself, at 26. I saw Kiwi mention she's been doing yoga for the pain she's having through her pregnancy and I was thinking it may help my back pain as well.
Any advice or suggestions? I'm in Middlesex county near 495 if you have a place to suggest. TIA!

I would definitely recommend a class before or even over doing it on your own/with a video. A good instructor will be attentive to your form and make sure you're not doing the positions incorrectly which could lead to injury, especially since you have pre-existing back issues.
When I go (which I should do more often!) I go to Baron Baptiste and they have yoga studios in Brookline and Cambridge. There's is hot room (think 95 degrees) Power Vinyasa, so it focuses on fluid movement. I love it, and they have basics classes a few times each week that focus on correct form and really slow down the movements. They also do a "Relax and Renew" that is more meditative as well.

I have had a million docs suggest yoga to me (scoliosis, sciatica, fibromyalgia,whiplash, migraines, TMJ, slipped and herniated discs, chronic fatigue, arthritis, etc). I have to admit I have been quite lax in following through, though.
Basically, the only advice I have ever gotten in a class was "Just do whatever feels comfortable. Push yourself only the tiniest bit."
However, I would recommend taking a *few* classes and then just getting a DVD and doing it at home. The classes can be rather expensive, unless you have a gym membership, and I don't think they're worth it, personally.
My other advice is to take it slow. At the beginning, you will *not* look like the people on the tape. Do what makes *you* feel good and don't try to be a super star, at least not in the beginning.
Let us/me know how it goes. Maybe your newfound motivation will make me get into again. God only knows how I need it.
Go to a class.
I'm totally self conscious in front of people (you want find me at a dance style exercise class) but when you are practicing in a class you get help from the instructor, and if you go to a studio rather than a gym, I have found that the people practicing at the studio are more practicing the yoga than doing it and therefore are more inward and concnetrating on their own body, and in my experience I found the instructors more helpful in a studio setting.
Down 495, the ashram in Millis is a great place. Sometimes they have fairs and stuff where you can drop in to learn about yoga. The focus is on educating people about yoga, not in a religious cultish way. They practice Kundalini there.
I always found that I needed to take a class or else I would't be motivated enough to keep with the video at home.
I'm actually looking forward to going back and taking prenatal classes.... I've heard nothing but good things about them!
