As you know, a friend of mine opened a new bikram yoga studio last week. I went for the first time on Thursday and then again tonight and I am definitely feeling it! I consider myself to be pretty fit, but the standing poses really got my heart going and I've really got to work on my flexibility for the floor postures.
The heat and humidity were killer, too. She keeps it about 105 degrees and humidity in the 40s. The first time wasn't that humid, but she bought a humidifier this weekend, so the sweat was literally dripping off me tonight.
I feel great, though. I feel worked out, but not impossibly drained and I can already tell I'm going to sleep really really well tonight. Even better, all that heat opened my pores so that I sweat out all the toxins--my face feels sooo clean!
I'm going back again on Thursday! If you get a chance, definitely give it a try.

My Blog!
I was surprised that I didn't pass out! I'm fairly anemic and when my iron gets low, like it should be now with TOM, I am fairly prone to faint. If you keep hydrated throughout the day, you'll be just fine.
The moves are a little tough, but my friend tells me that there's a pretty qucik learning curve and most of the moves have varying degrees of difficulty, so even if you aren't able to complete a posture, you'll still get a really good workout. I noticed that even the really experienced people were falling out of the balancing postures. My friend calls them "learning experiences" and that they're totally expected.
Give it a try, you might surprise yourself!

Or at least try the floor poses. They require less strength and you'll get a really good stretch.

I LOVE Bikram. My sister got me going and I've been once a week since February. They tell you up front to sit down and take a break if you need it. The first class my goals were 1) Not pass out; and 2) Not throw up! So far I've been able to avoid both :-) It definitely gets easier the more you do it. Your body gets used to the heat.
I recommend it to everyone. If you go, make sure to hydrate well beforehand, and bring a big, cold bottle of water (or two) into the studio with you.
Well I'll at least try those...but when I start busting out laughing just ignore me...
Lol, that's okay. I almost laugh every time I fall out of a standing pose (which was a lot). Everyone seemed really nice, but I have "I'm friends with the owner" connections, so screw them if they do care.
