Washer/dryer suggestion

Does anyone have a suggestion for a washer and dryer set that they love?

We like the set we have now and would get something similar but I want to know if you girls have any other recommendations.

TIA!

Re: Washer/dryer suggestion

  • The only suggestion I ever have is to see if you can find a "scratch & dent" kind of place.  FIL works in the repair center of a big name company around here and the repair center sells "scratch & dent" appliances from big name company for hundreds less.  Some are obviously scratched/dented, but others are in perfect condition and they can't find why they've been sent them (but still mark them down significantly.)
  • At our last place (had to sell them when we moved to a condo building) We had Kenmores and loved them!
  • We're looking at the Whirlpool Cabrio or the GE Profile Harmony.  Our builder uses GE so if we go through the builder to buy the w/d, we'll get that one.  I like the Cabrio and it always comes out on top on the reviews I've read, but customer reviews don't seem so great.  There was a nestie on some other board that loved hers though...besides that, I've never found anyone else who has them that I could talk to personally.

I'm just dead set against a front loader now.  I love the way they look, but I don't want to deal with having to leave the door open to avoid mildew and stinkiness.

ETA:  I'm insisting on an HE washer though.  Even though they're top loaders, they work like front loaders.

Damn you Nest for screwing up my siggy!

  • I have the whirlpool duet sport set and really like it.  My only complaint is when the timer says estimated timing it truly is an estimate because it will say 1 minute remaining and it's like 10 minutes.

  • Really you have to leave the door open on front loaders to keep them from getting all mildewy?

Good suggestion Paula to look into a scratch and dent place. Wonder if we have anywhere near here?

My mom has a front loader that she bought this time last year and has never had a mildew problem.  (She always leaves her doors closed).  I can ask what kind she has.  I have heard that some of them have that issue and my sister had an old front loader that did.

I'd never heard of this either and we have a front loader!  I can't believe my FIL to give me this instruction since he's Mr. Appliance Nazi. LOL  I wonder if we should start doing this... Confused

  • My sister has a F/L and her instructions told her to do it.  You can also wipe down the rubber seal really well and that should take care of the problem.  She leaves the door open and has never had a problem.

Mandy, I don't think it happens overnight, but after a while you'll get mold growing under the seal.  If you google front loader reviews you'll see that almost all the bad reviews have this problem.  It's easily preventable - just wipe it down or leave the door open - but personally, I don't have enough room in my utility room to leave the door open w/o walking into it and I don't want to clean my washer after I use it.

Damn you Nest for screwing up my siggy!

  • Val: mom may wipe her's down.  I've never asked what she does to prevent it.  I'll ask her when I talk to her next!
