Eek, where to start. Awesome episode, but I'm a Desomnd-lover no matter what he's up to. I'm gussing his change of heart at the end along with his "meh, whatever" attitude toward Sayid is all related to what he experienced in his parallel universe. He either knows more than the writers let on in this episode, or maybe he figures that if he goes along with whatever Widmore is planning he can someone get back to the world where he is rich and still gets to chill with Penny. I dunno.
I like that George Minkowski was the limo driver. That was cool. Did we know before that Faraday was Widmore's son? Or did we just suspect it?
Re: LOST, anyone? (spoilers)
I can't remember which episode revealed that Widmore was Daniel's father, but it was revealed to the audience. I don't think Daniel ever knew...
Loved the episode. Love Desmond.
After the episode last night, I told my husband, "I'm not sure I even know what I *want* to happen anymore." Do I want the Losties to live their sideflashy life or the Island life? I DON'T KNOW. For some people the sideflash life seems so much better - Sawyer, Locke, and Ben all seem to have it pretty good or at least are getting there. Whereas, I sense things are going to be very bad for Locke, Sayid, and Claire on the island. One thing's becoming clear: they can't have both lives. So. much. tension. I love it.
We knew Daniel was Widmore's son - Eloise told him when Daniel went back in time and she shot him and was pg.
I love Desmond. My theory last week was that he's not affected like others b/c he found his constant (Penny) and was able to not have his brain explode like the other people. I still think that is true but what I found interesting in the flash sideways was that he didn't meet Penny until after he followed Sayid. Which makes me wonder if each choice he makes changes the path of his current and alternate life. So - if he goes w/ Locke, his current life won't exist and his flash sideways becomes his new reality. If he goes w/ Widmore, then his current life continues.
I also thought it was very interesting that Eloise didn't want him to meet Penny in his flash sideways life either. Just like she kept them apart in his past. Is she on Locke's side? Why doesn't she want Desmond to find Penny? Is it b/c she knows he's the one that can "save" the island and the future?
I also liked seeing Faraday in the flash sideways. I was thinking he'd be off his rocker but he was very normal. Nice to see him again.
I thought Desmond was Faraday's constant.
Yes, but Penny is Desmond's constant.
Faraday doesn't need a constant anymore b/c he's dead on the island too.
I think Desmond is self aware, no one else seems to know they exist both on the island and in their sideways life. But Desmond seems to be experiencing both. Maybe b/c he was electromagnatized or maybe b/c he has his constant in the sideways world.
Ooh! Love your theories, Abrooks! I hadn't really put the connection between him not meeting Penny until he followed Sayid, but I definitely like that Desmond is bringing this piece of the story together.
And how creepy is it that Eloise knows what is going on in all fronts? I'm sure Widmore does as well, and they are in cahoots - who else would automatically be "in the know"?
good episode.
at the end, what did desmond mean when he said he wanted to show 'him' something, having to do with the list of passengers?
i don't think i agree that what happens in one life affects the sideways life. what we're seeing in america isn't happening at the same time as what we're seeing on the island, because the america stuff is happening just after the first oceanic flight, while the island stuff is happening after the agerianwhatever flight. they're 3 years apart.
i, too, wonder why eloise keeps trying to keep desmond away from penny. i liked that eloise pointed out that desmond has always wanted widmore's approval - definitely true in both lives.
so when did widmore hook-up with penny's mom, if he's been with eloise since they were young? did he have an affair, or did they separate for some time?
so is charlie going to seek-out claire?
I was wondering about the Widmore thing too. My co-worker said that the reason Widmore got kicked off the island was because he found a way to leave and come back, and when he left the island he had an affair with Penny's mother. I don't remember any of this and haven't had a chance to verify yet.
This is a very good point. This means that in the sideways, the bomb did not harm Ellie and Widmore. We're assuming Ben and his dad and baby Miles and little Charlotte got off safely in the sub. But Ellie and Widmore were still on the island. How long did they stay there? Did Widmore still have that affair while he was co-leader then get kicked off? Did Ellie have Faraday on the island? What shape was the island in after the bomb? And when/how did it get underwater as it is now? How much does Ellie know about both timelines and/or the future and how much influence did she have over Desmond's life in both cases, knowing what she knows? Why is she keeping Desmond and Penny apart? Is it to motivate Desmond or does she just hate her Widmore's daughter with another woman?
Agghhh so many questions!!

eloise and widmore might not have been on the island yet. when we previously saw them as young'uns (when they were all time jumping around), it was after the dharma people were gone (thanks ben), and the others had taken over. we don't know for sure that eloise and widmore were part of the others before that point, and if they were we don't know for how long. right?
but widmore and eloise must have hooked-up at the same time as they would have pre-bomb, since daniel appears to be the same age.
so if they didn't get to the island before the bomb, they never made it there.
my brain hurts. but in a good way. love this show.
They were on the island since the 50's (1954 was when we saw them at their youngest). Then in 1977 was when Ellie shot Daniel and led Jack (who Widmore captured) to the bomb's location. Ellie (who was pregnant at the time with Daniel) and Widmore were co-leaders at that time. They were part of the Hostiles in '54 it seemed but I don't remember how they got there. Ben didn't kill the Dharma people ("the purge") until 1992 I think in the original timeline but since he and his dad left the island when he was a kid in the sideways... who knows what went on on the island (if there was one) post bomb. I don't think pre-bomb history would have changed (except for how the time traveling affected it, but even then, what happened happened, ya know?
