D&RR: Mantles

You may remember this pic. Note the faux fireplace (that we get to keep - yay!)

What do you prefer over a mantle?  Current thoughts are:

1. mirror (not like the seller's) either propped on mantle or hanging above

2. wedding photo (maybe like this? http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs159.snc1/5932_693364819323_14233525_40239535_4346684_n.jpg

3. wrought iron wall decor (something like this maybe? image

Other?

Re: D&RR: Mantles

  • It's a personal quirk, but I don't like mirrors over fireplaces. My mom had one in her house my whole life, and I never realized how much I didn't like it until she replaced it with a large family portrait. The portrait looks SO much better. So, my vote would be for your wedding picture.

Above our fireplace now, we have a paining of the Eiffel Tower I bought in Paris and two smaller wrought iron wall sconces. So I'm a fan of the third option too.

  • #1 Wedding Pic

    #2 Wrought Iron

    #3 Mirror

I agree the picture is a personal touch.  I'm kinda eh on mirrors in general.

  • Oddly, DH voted for wedding pic, which surprised me.

Confession (and the GTG girls can attest to this) - my apt right now has like 6 blown up wedding pics alone just in the living room. And those are just the ones over 11x14. My apt is a huge shrine to our wedding.

    And I love it.

  • #1 - Large picture (could be wedding), but I'm not a huge fan of having pics of "us" all over the place.

    #2 - Mirror (I like mirror's)

#3 - The thingy w/ the candles (#3 only because, how are you going to light candles when they are up that high, and I have a pet peeve w/ candles that aren't used on a normal basis).

  • I was looking at some pics of mirrors over fireplaces, and while some are done modernly, I think I'm turning against that option.

philly, option #3 was just an example of wrought iron decor I pulled from Google images. I most likely wouldn't buy a candle piece, and if I did, I wouldn't light them.

  • Large wedding photo or wrought iron thing.  I'm also not a fan of mirrors over mantles.
  • I currently have a mirror over my mantle and now I'm thinking I need to replace it but I still think it looks nice... but I do agree its generic and I did it because I needed something big because my ceilings go up another 12 feet and it was a cheap option.

Wedding picture... maybe - maybe not.  It definitely depends on the picture.  An artsy picture blown up on a big canvas or framed professionally, ok.  A kissy picture not so much.  I always think its wierd when people have giant pictures of themselves kissing.  The other thing that would stop me from spending the money on a canvas wrap or big framed picture would be that I know I would want to do a family picture in the future and I plan to have kids in the next year or 2 so I would probably want to replace it soon.  We have a canvas print of a more-artsy wedding print in our bedroom that I plan to hang forever and am in love with but it would look wierd in our LR.

I agree with pp on the candle thing... they are kinda in the class with mirrors IMO, they look nice but they are generic.  And I wouldnt get one that had candles in it.

In our next house, I'm hoping we can hang a flat screen over our fireplace...

  • Is the wedding photo I linked above too kissy? I like that you can't tell it's us because of the silhouette. I have that as either a 8x10 or 11x14 in a matted frame. Most of my other big ones are vertical.

I'm considering FINALLY buying a flatscreen once we get our tax credit. But I'm not sure I want to mount it.

  • I think the one you linked is a good idea but I don't think I would want it to be so black and white... it might look too dark depending on what you do with it.

I only have it in B&W. In fact, other than two enlargements, everything I blew up from the wedding that's in my apt are B&Ws.  I love B&W prints in thick black frames. Goes with everything.

How wide is the mantle?  I would probably go with something larger than 11x14.  I can't remember...did you get all your original images on a CD?  If so, I'd check out MPix and get a wraparound canvas of the image at more of a 20x24 size.

  • M, yep I have my images on CD. I have a coupon for $50 off a canvas at canvasondemand, but I can't decide on WHICH one to canvas! Any thoughts?

Agreed... you should go bigger.  DH's cousin gave us a canvas print for a wedding present and we put it over our dresser in our BR and its 20x30

  • Are you positive that's 20x30? That doesn't look bigger than 10x20. Unless you have a mammoth dresser.

I love the silhouette one you posted.  I also like the one of you guys in your signature on here.  I think the silhouette is my fave though!

Thanks! I wish I had the rights to my RTD pic. I have this one in my sig in a 11x14 frame but 8x10 pic. So both my options are just a wee too small. Unless I stack them? Or just blow up an entirely different photo. Well, at least we came to the conclusion on a wedding pic instead of a mirror. I can put my thick black rectangular mirror in the DR or on the adjacent LR wall.

  • What about maybe a photo collage over the mantle?  You could do various sizes and some vertical, some horizontal.  Something like this...

  • Or use both the 8x10's or 11x14's next to each other in matching frames...

I have a serious obsession with square frames, but don't own any b/c I always have trouble finding photos that fit them well...

  • I'll put my vote in as a big fan of mirrors over fireplaces.  Here's Mrs Paz from D&R's fabulous living room decorated for different seasons:
