at my school. For those of you not in the business, what that means is a school is allotted teachers each year based on our enrollment numbers. If there is declining enrollment, then the teacher with the lowest seniority gets declared surplus. If there's a place for them somewhere else in the board, then they get to go there. If there's nowhere, then they're let go... and no jobs!
Last year, I was suplused from my high school and placed in the junior high school I teach at now. And, even though I've been teaching for almost two years, I'm still at the bottom of the pile. Anyway, there are three teachers currently on leave... any of whom come back, means I lose my place at this school. There's one current teacher who's planning on taking a year off... so maybe, MAYBE I'll be safe for round one. Of course, I still have to survive round two... where any surplused teacher with more seniority than me can demand my position.
Employment vibes would be deeply appreciated!

I can take some consolation that getting moved around has nothing to do with my ability as a teacher, but just to do with seniority. It's cumulative in the board (so I have 1.8 years right now), but I have the lowest in my school - the next lowest is 7 years! So, as much as I keep telling myself that I'll be fine, and that I was almost let go from the board last year (as I had 0.8 years of seniority) but it turned out fine... it's still super stressful.

Surplus sounds so impersonal, like someone ordered too much of an item.
