I am wondering if there are any recent reviews of the Essure procedure? I tried to search but the search function does not seem to work still!
It is something I am considering so I am wondering if anyone around here has had it done recently and/or how the procedure went, any side effects you've noticed, if it has been effective, what did you use for BC before the efficacy was tested, etc.
I'm going to my OB/Gyn this afternoon and will be discussing it with her.

Thanks in advance!
Re: Essure BC Procedure
I did it a year and a half ago. No side effects; very easy. I guess it's been effective, because I'm not pregnant!
I tried the IUD 2 separate times prior, but my uterus expelled both of them (I don't know why it did that).
Oh PS - I was under general anesthesia for the procedure.
Americanrumba, Can you tell us more? Any hormone changes, period issues, etc??
What was the procedure to check to make sure that it took?
There aren't any hormone changes because nothing is changed....hormonally. The doctors insert a metal (nickle) coil into each fallopian tube, and scar tissue grows around the coil forming a blockage. Same concept as a tubal ligation - the egg cannot travel down to the uterus to be fertilized and sperm cannot travel past the blockage. But with the Essure, there's no incision. I was under general anesthesia when it was performed, but they go up through the vag to do it.
After about 3 months, the scar tissue should be complete, and you would go in for a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) test. Basically, they insert some dye up into the uterus and run an x-ray to make sure the dye doesn't leak out into the fallopian tubes. At which point, the procedure is considered a success and one may resume sexual activities without need for another form of protection.
I should mention that I had the Novasure (endometrial ablation) procedure done at the same time. This procedure is for people with heavy periods, but not recommended for those who would like to have kids (or more kids). Basically, they burn out most of endometrial lining of the uterus, so there's nothing (or very little) to shed each month. My periods were really awful before - now they're extremely light and last anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days. I only need to wear a panty liner. I haven't used my diva cup since the procedure.
After the procedures, I had a little bit of cramping. I went home, took a nap with a heating pad, then woke up and felt fine. I made dinner that night and haven't had any issues since.
The two procedures combined were over $7k, but with my insurance, I think I paid around $500ish, if I remember correctly.
Thanks for the info!!
Never heard of Novasure. I need to look into that.
I had it done a little over a year ago, it was a very simple procedure. I was also under general anestesia, I checked in the hospital at 6:30 and left around 11am. The actual procedure itself only took a few minutes the rest was waiting, getting the anestesia and waiting in the recovery room. When I went home I took a couple Motrin took a nap and was fine the rest of the day. I would do it again in a heartbeat. My total out of pocket for it was just a little over $700. I have read that a lot of Dr's do it in office without the anestesia but my Dr said he isn't comfortable doing it that way and prefers to do it in the OR. I also had instructed my Dr that if for some reason he couldn't get the Essure inserted to go ahead and to a regular tubal instead.
I had the Implanon implant before having this done and kept it in until it was suppose to be removed in Feb. I didn't have any periods on that and haven't gotten one back so I can't remark as to how my periods will be after the Essure.
Thank you for all the responses! I appreciate it.
They are calling me to schedule the Essure procedure. My OB does it right in the office and just told me to take some ibuprofen before I come and they will give me more at the office. She said it is that simple!
I'm back on the pill for the next few months but am happy to know there is an end in sight.
