***!!! Money Vent...

So, we bought a new car last month. Fine. Car payment went up a little bit, but not enough to stress about. Fine. DH decides to bring our car payment early to the bank along with the paperwork for online payment stuff - the car payment check was post-dated for April 25th. Fine.

Except neither of us knew/thought/realized that banks don't care about post-dated checks...so the check went thru two weeks earlier than planned..which means we are now in the hole a few hundred bucks. Dumbasatic banks. Luckily DH gets paid tomorrow so that will help some, and thankfully we had SOME money in savings so we didn't get hit with a TON of fees, but enough that it hurts. So upset now, b/c there went the little bit we were saving for savings/baby/house. GRR!!! We'll be okay and somewhat better after tomorrow, but that just really sucked monkey balls hard. And that means our budget is that much more tighter since not only are we climbing out of a hole, but we're also going to have to increase the amount we put into savings to get back to where we are supposed to be.

Sorry so long, just really disappointed/upset/frustrated.  Just our own stupidity and lesson learned.

Re: ***!!! Money Vent...

  • I dont understand how a bank can cash a check before the date you signed for?  I thought that was the whole point of putting a date on a check?

I am sorry, that totally sucks.  We are trying to work our way out of a hole from DHs truck needing repairs to I can totally relate!

  • Did you contact the bank yet?  I would seriously want to know why they cashed it and if they don't take post dated checks why something wasn't said to your H when he brought it down there.
  • Sorry you are dealing with this, like the others said though- I would go ask the bank WTF they were doing.

Also- just wanted to let you know that you aren't the only "broke one" out there right now. We have some savings (thankfully) but nowhere near where I really want us to be, and me being on Spring break this week has only left me with plenty of time to crunch the numbers and realize that it's gonna be a LONG time before we are financially "comfortable". Don't sweat it though, you'll be fine!

  • DH called the bank where the car loan is thru last night, and they said b/c the check was from bank to bank, they don't have to adhere to the date, b/c they know they're covered if it doesn't go thru.

I can kind of understand this, when I worked in customer service at a grocery store, we couldn't cash checks (paychecks, etc) with a post-date on it b/c the store doesn't have any guarantee that the funds are available. So I can somewhat understand this.

The really unfortunate part is that I've been letting DH handle everything financial - balancing the checkbook, paying the bills, etc. Unfortunately, we were already overdrafted before the check went through (and others), b/c he made a 'calculation error'. Grr...so I'm going to take back balancing the checkbook I think from here on out. I think it'll work much better if I do the checkbook and he pays the bills. I would ask if we were okay to buy this or that, and he was always saying yeah we're fine, we have a surplus this month. Wrong-o!

  • That sucks. There is a delicate balance between what goes in and timing when it comes out. I manage our bankiing b/c my dh isn't the most accurate at tracking the checkbook either.

  • That really sucks.  It would have done a number on us as well, so I totally get the frustration.

From what I understand (as I was told from a bank), checks for bills don't count as far as post dating.  They can cash it whenever they want regardless of what date is on the check.  Most laws actually state that writing a post-dated check is illegal.  Stupid, I know.

Hope things get back to normal soon.

Yep, that's what I heard too. Sucks.

  • That freaking sucks! I think it's a good idea for you to take back control of the checkbook.
  • That really sucks, I'm sorry that happened.  I hope everything gets balanced out soon enough for you guys!

  • So annoying. Sorry, missy. Like you said, lesson learned, I guess.
  • Thanks ladies...between the PMS and this, I kind of lost it a bit. DH got paid today so all the fees have been paid and we're now in the positive, thank goodness. Just super annoying.
