Poll: Education

so, I know there are a lot of girls on here who are currently going to school/have gone to school...I know what a few of you are studying..but I'm always curious if someone is studying the same thing/has the same degree as me..

..so, what are you going to school for/did you go to school for/plan to go to school for?

  • I have a bachelors of science in environmental science and a double minor in studio fine arts and botany. I am currently doing my masters in Landscape Architecture and then going to do an additional year for a Masters in Environmental Planning and Design. I hope to one day do a Ph.D. in wildlife biology.
  • I graduated in May with my bachelors in English literature and applied mathematics (yay math nerds!).

My job has a program that allows some employees to get their masters in survey methodology, so I plan on starting that next year!  Though, I'm not really looking forward to going back to school so soon...I guess better now than later when we will definitely have kids, higher-stress jobs, etc.

  • I have my BA in Psychology and I am currently working on my master's in Occupational Therapy. Another year or so and I will finally be done! I can't wait, although once school is done then I have to take an exam to get licensed...most people report that the exam is pretty tough..ugh! One step at a time

  • I have a BA in Political Science and a minor in Philosophy. I am trying to find a school to get my masters in Education, and to get certified for K-6.

  • I replied to this earlier but the Nest seems to have eaten my post.

I have a B.A. in history.  I don't know if I'll continue on.  We're not at a point right now here I can do that for a couple reasons.  I would love to go back ot school but I know I wouldn't do anything with it.  As it is I don't know that I'll ever use my B.A. that much.

I have a BA in Performing Arts Management.

Every few months, I toy with the idea of going back for a Master's in Business Administration or Non-Profit Management. However, if I decide to continue working in the non-prof world, my experience will help me more than an extra degree ever will.  Also, H is doing his second BA now, so we'll have loans up the wazoo when he's done.  Teachers and non-profit professionals aren't paid nearly enough!

THIS! I worked for a wildlife non-profit for a couple of years in D.C. and wasn't even paid enough to live where I worked. I had to live an hour and a half away just to afford rent on my salary and take the train to work every morning at 6 am. I hope this changes soon!

Although, word on the street is (at least in MD) if you graduate and work in the non-profit sector they give you a certain amount of loan forgiveness, I forget the actual number and I'm about to walk out the door for school, but I'll look it up later.

Yeah, it's no good.  I'm doing alright now because I've been in the industry for 4 or 5 years...but when I started?  Ugh.

I know I would make significantly more and do significantly less if I went corporate, but I think I would have even less motivation than I do now.  I'd rather make less and do something I believe in than make more and support some big money-making company - but I may change my tune in the future.  Who knows?

I'm pretty sure Illinois doesn't have loan forgiveness for non-profit employees (I'm sure I would have heard of it!), but let me know what info you find!  That's intriguing.

  • I have an AD in Mechanical Engineering. And currently working on an AD in nursing. Also, not much to talk about are two certificate degrees, one as a CNA and another as an EMT-Basic. Once I am done with getting the ADN, I plan on bridging to be a Medic and focusing on a Nurse-Medic career.

  • I'm working on a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering.
  • I have a B.A. in Religious Studies and Philosophy with minors in History and Sociology. I had started a M.Div degree, but am not sure that I want to continue to pursue that. I know I want (and unfortunately need) a Masters, or maybe even a PhD, but I cannot decide which direction to take in my field, and hence which degree(s) to pursue.

  • I have a BA with an individualized major in Theater & Design. My school was tiny (at the time) and allowed you to design your own major if it wasn't offered (theater was only offered as a minor), which is pretty cool. I was able to combine the best theater, art, and communications courses which wrapped up into one big final senior project involving putting on a full length show that I picked, cast, directed, designed and produced. It was awesome.

I could never be smart enough to even attempt this.  Imagine that involves a lot of math and sciencey things.  I'm not so good at those.  Hence my useless history degree.

I loved the few courses on religion I took in college.  Did you ever read anything by Bart D. Ehrman?  I love his work in early Christianity.

    So after lots of looking:

http://www.studentloannetwork.com/repayment/forgiveness.php that is the best I can find. I was mistaken, it's not for non-profit work, it's either for volunteer work or state/local government work if you make less than $40,000 a year.

  • I have a double major BA in Criminal Justice/Psychology with a Minor in Linguistics and an MFA in Graphic Design.  I'm currently thinking of going back from an MFA in Photography as well to be able to be credentialed to teach in the Photography program at the college I currently teach at.

Ahhhh.  There's a similar program for teachers - I think if you go into special ed?  But there are always a LOT of rules around them.

There should be loan forgiveness for non-profit employees!  When I win the lottery, I'll set something up ;)

I have a BA in Liberal Arts and a Master's in Elementary Education, which leaves me fairly unemployable in Chicago. Sad I'd love to go back to school to get special ed approval or a middle school endorsement, but I don't have the money or time right now to do it.
