Jamaica girls

Hey ladies!

The hubs and I are looking into going to Jamaica for vaca this summer.  Our TA suggested either Sandals Whitehouse or Negril.  Anyone have any feedback or reviews of either?  What about Jamaica in general?  Is it safe there?  I don't think we plan to leave the resort much, we may just lay on the beach and do nothing. :)

TIA for any info!

Re: Jamaica girls

  • I stayed at Sandals Royal Caribbean (in MoBay) a few years ago.  We only left the resort for a couple of excursions (ziplining and the Dunns River Falls) and to check out the Hip Strip one night.  It was perfectly safe in our experience.  We were actually planning a return trip to Sandals Dunns River Villagio for this coming July prior to finding out about the pregnancy, so obviously we liked Jamaica.

As for the 2 resorts you're considering, we considered those 2 along with DRV for the July trip but chose DRV simply because DH golfs and they have a course on site.  I've heard nothing but good things about Negril (there are a few brides on here that got married there) and the only complaint that I heard about Whitehouse is that it's really "quiet" there.  So I guess depending on what type of vacation you're looking for, you might want to keep that in mind.  Whitehouse doesn't really have anything around it as opposed to Negril that has a lot around it.

  • I married at Sandals Negril and we loved it there!  I have pics of the property in my bio (that we took).  The property isn't too big or too small...it was perfect for us.  My advice if you go to Sandals Negril is to get a room with an oceanview...we didn't and regretted it, but we really couldn't afford it.  My MoH had an oceanview room with the most magnificent view (it was a Grand Luxe Beachfront Room).

I've looked into Whitehouse for a return trip too.  I think that the prices are a bit lower and if I remember correctly, most of the rooms are on the ocean.  There was a post on the "Travel" board about it a few weeks ago.  It would also be longer drive to get to from the airport...but it does look awesome!  I've also heard that it is "quiet" like Natalie mentioned.

We felt safe in Jamaica. We walked off the property in Negril and the merchants really, really, really wanted our business.  But we knew that they would...that's how they make their money!  We went on quite a few excursions too...it was all just fine.

Okay...now I'm jealous and my head is full of steel drums and visions of palm trees...ahhhhhh.

  • I absolutely love Jamaica. It's the only place I could go again and again. I haven't stayed at either resort you've mentioned. Personally, I prefer to stay in MoBay just because it's close to the airport. We got married at the Lady Hamilton/Grand Palladium in Lucea (half way between Mobay and Negril) and would definitely go back.
  • I LOVED Jamaica.  I think we are going to go back there in November for our 1 year anniversary.  I haven't stayed at either of the hotels you mentioned, but did stay at the Riu Palace in Negril and it was BEAUTIFUL!  I would go back there in a heartbeat!

  • Thanks for the info ladies!  We definitely prefer the quiet so it sounds like Whitehouse may be a good choice... I just wish it wasn't so far from the airport!
  • Marelina is in Jamaica right now...I don't know where she is staying though.  Maybe she can help you out when she gets back...not that the posts you got already aren't helpful 8)
  • I super big puffy heart Jamaica!!! We flew into MoBay and drove 2+ hours via bus to Ocho Rios (just past Dunns River) where we stayed.  We left the resort to climb Dunns River Falls, which is a must IMO.  There where plenty of locals and we felt perfectly comfortable.

We also left our resort to go to a sister resort and to a golf course, and in all the driving around I didn't see anything that made me uncomfortable/ feel unsafe.

I think if you stick to the tourist attractions you are fine - head in the heart of Kingston, all bets are off, kwim?

  • If you are going to go Negril... I would go RIU as opposed to Sandals.  The RIU is (IMO) WAY prettier and more up to date then the Sandals.
  • We went to Couples Negril and it is absolutely amazing.  All the frills that Sandals has but on a smaller scale.  It was nice and quite and serene.  All couples, no kids!

I was definitely planning to pick her brain when she gets back. :)

P.S. I LOVE all your tickers... especially the "cupcake eating trip"  :)

  • Thanks for all the suggestions!  The hubs kind of wants to stick with Sandals though... we had a less than great experience at a non-Sandals resort last year so he's skeptical to try another new chain this year.
  • We're not big fans of just sitting around at a resort.  If we go somewhere we kind of want to experience some of the culture, too, which is why we loved Negril.  It's really beautiful there, and safe.  We left the resort many, many times on our own.  Just walked up and down the beach and whatnot.  Got to know a few people (both tourists and locals) which was fun.  We looked into Whitehouse for our honeymoon but didn't like how isolated it was.  Though the resort itself looks amazing!

We stayed at Sandals Negril, btw, and loved it.  We had the beach front honeymoon villa thingies and they were beautiful rooms!

I obviously would say Sandals Negril. It was cool b/c if you felt like partying, you could go hang out by the piano bar. But the rest of the resort seemed quiet and very romantic. So you could it either way.

Negril seemed very safe. We walked down the 7mile beach during the day on the public beaches and it was fine. I just would use the precautions that you use at home.  There are people trying to get you to buy things in the public parts sometimes but if you just say no thank you, they just leave you alone. Left me know if you have any questions. Also, not sure how many Sandals you have been to but I heard your 2nd one you can get half off. I am super jealous, have fun deciding !

I don't think this is true, unless they've been scamming us for the the past few years.  We just took our 4th Sandals vacation and yes, you get a discount based on what you spent on past trips, but it is by no means half off.  Our biggest discount was on this past trip, which was close to $1K off (which was still only about a third), but that was based on our previous trip which was the weddingmoon.  We had a bulter category room for 12 days, so obviously with the $ we spent on that, we deserved a $1K reward!  Once you sign up for the Signature Guests Program, you can check your account balance and figure out how much of a discount you'll get on your trip.
