a vent- working, motherhood, and idiots

So I am officially (almost) going back to work next year.  I was in talking to my boss yesterday and she says, "So are you ready to give this all up?" gesturing to B. who is in my lap.  I almost started to cry right there!  Blargh.  I don't have to work, but it fits in with our long term plans including sending B. to my private school.  It was so frustrating to hear her say that.  Grrr

Re: a vent- working, motherhood, and idiots

  • What an awful thing to say!  How dumb - you are going back to work, not placing your baby for adoption!  You will still be a great mom, and now your time with B will be even more precious to you!

  • Ugh.  Idiot.  People say dumb things, especially about motherhood.

  • Some people just have diarrhea of the mouth and just don't think before they speak! Try not to be too upset...just realize people are stupid!

  • People are so stupid. I am not sure if this will help, but I just read this great blog post on emerging leaders and having babies. I found the comments incredibly insightful and reassuring.  It is an arts blog, but I think the basic ideas about our generation and work/life balance are relevant across all fields.  Obviously it is a very personal decision, but having a family and working can be a wonderfully healthy thing to do.
  • IMO, a reasonable question, if surely a lousy wording of it.
  • boooo!!! what an awkward, awfully worded question. try not to let it bother you - I hate that there has to be this idea of either work or baby - that you can't possibly do or live both.

  • You will be just fine, and I totally agree that will make your time with Bea all the more precious, and she'll come to anticipate it too! Working mommies are indeed superheroes!
  • That is such an awkwardly phrased question. Don't feel bad, and don't feel like you're giving your baby up. You're going to continue being a wonderful mommy!
