Got my internship placement! Anyone drive on 95 every day?

I was hoping to be placed at Boston Medical Center since that's where I've done my practicum and I really like the hospital but apparently they don't like to place us the same site for both...so I'm going to Beverly Hospital for my Dietetic Internship. I don't really know anything about the hospital and I guess it's good that I'll have connections at 2 hospitals now but I'm dreading having to drive from Woburn/Reading every day. Anyone take 95 every day? How is the traffic? I'll be taking 95 N in the mornings and 95 S to get home but I'm hoping that my early hours will help me avoid some of the traffic!

Re: Got my internship placement! Anyone drive on 95 every day?

  • Oh boy. On the bright side it is usually worse on 95S in the morning and 95N in the afternoon (though 95S can be just as bad in the afternoon). I don't drive on 95 but go by it while on Rt.2 between 745-8am and it is already bad (then again around 515-530pm). If you're driving on it before 7am then it won't be as bad. By 4pm in the afternoon it usually getting pretty bad again until 630 or so. If you have a 7am-3pm shift the traffic won't be as bad for you.

  • Congrats! My good friend is halfway done with her internship at BWH. It's intense and because of rotations, her schedule changes frequently.

You should be fine-- 95S gets backed up randomly in the evenings but I think you should be ok- especially since you are in Woburn/ Reading.

  • So for some reason I thought you were in Waltham, not Woburn. Mesa is right - it shouldn't be too bad from Woburn. There will be a lot of traffic around 93 so if there are some back roads you can take to get on 95 after the 93 exchange that would help.

  • Oh and BH is a pretty good place... I used to hang out there a lot because my dad was an administrator there. There are some really great departments there.
  • It's actually a little faster for me to take back roads than to get on from 93 so I'll probably do that. And my hours will likely be 7-3 or 6-2 so hopefully I can avoid some of the traffic!

Mesa- how did your friend like the Brigham? That was my second choice when I applied last year but I hear its a lot of work! It's a long program too- I'm so excited mine is only 29 weeks!

  • Congrats!  I will echo the others and say that you are going against most traffic, so it won't be too bad.  My aunt used to commute from Woburn to Salem and it was fine.  Back roads to avoid the 93 interchange will help you out a ton, too.

Sooooooooooo much work! She's crazed all the time... and she never knows her schedule and they are pretty strict. I think she likes it but it's hard to tell. I think you get an amazing amount of exposure and experience though. She also has a lot more background and education than most of the dieticians... she has her MPH and has a lot of research and teaching experience.

The interns at my hospital don't seem nearly as worked or as much responsibilities as my friend... I think BWH has the toughest program.

  • You should be fine on 95 at that time of day (although 3 is when traffic starts to pick up I think, so make sure you leave right away :-P) What you will have the most trouble with is 128, where it splits off from 95. I went to school in Beverly and can tell you 128 up there is the WORST. The biggest problem is it's two lanes with no real room for expansion, so it just gets worse and worse as traffic gets heavier.

  • I trained for my job in Beverly and took 95 from the Reading area everyday, it wasn't bad at all, occasionally I'd get stuck on my way home but not very often. Good luck with the internship!
  • I second JCam (went to the same school). 128 is horrible but you should be ok with missing the really bad traffic.

I also second that Beverly Hospital is a great hospital to be working; I was born there. Stick out tongue
