Do you think that the character attacks will backfire on MPC?

Any other election year I think I woudl have said that they would work to their advantage, and every other election year that seems to have been the case.?

This year I am wondering if they will backfire. I think that many people really are paying attention to the actual issues and really want to hear about the economy, not who someone knows/knew that did bad things 40 years ago. I think that mabey these ads are not going to have the desired affect.

?Do you think that OBC will go negative as well, or do you think they will try and stay above the fray??

Re: Do you think that the character attacks will backfire on MPC?

  • I don't think it will work. Undecideds and independants, the last target group either side needs to win, don't take kindly to negativity.

I do think Obama will counter attack, or at least respond to MPC accusations. It's a lesson Dems learned from Kerry.

  • I always appreciate the "my running mate is lying about ___" commercials from either side - so if Obama started doing those to combat the negative McCain ads I would be fine.
  • Here is an ad that Obama has already launched anticipating the attacks from McCain. I like it. I think it stays above the fray for the most part, and points out exactly why McCain is launching this negative push.

I don't think McCain's strategy will work, either. I think people see that he is behind, and will, to a degree, write off the negativity as a last ditch effort.

  • I agree with you.  I think that in any other year, this strategy might work.  But the issues are at the forefront this year, particularly given the economy.  Additionally, the momentum has shifted against McCain.  I think that given the "Palin has no substance" theme that seems to be growing, attack ads are going to seem hollow, desperate, and on a certain level, hypocritical.
