feel badly...

My best friend (and was my MOH) is engaged and getting married in October.  I'm so happy for her, and she's asked me to be a bridesmaid.  She's also mentioned several times about me coming to Dallas to go gown shopping with her.  She's scheduled shopping for next weekend - and although I'm 'technically' free Saturday, it would be an event.

I work until 8:30 Friday night, and I'm not comfortable driving that far, that late.  Then Saturday morning I'd have to get up at the crack of dawn to make it there - then drive back.  I'm not great at driving distances either - so the whole thing doesn't really appeal to me.

I feel selfish because I *could* go, but it would be very difficult.  There will be so many things in Dallas (her wedding will be there) - I just feel torn.  Fwiw, her mom and her MOH all live in Dallas - so she wouldn't be alone.  She's asked if I had that weekend free, and I told her yes... so I'll have to go back on this...

I don't even know what to say to her because everything sounds really selfish.  Maybe that's a sign???

What do you think?

horrible friend?  or the most horrible friend on the planet?

Re: feel badly...

  • I would try to go.  Is there any way you can take your DH so that you aren't driving the distance on your own?  He could go do something around town while you're with her.  Even just chill at Barnes and Noble- read magazines and drinking some coffee.

  • you're not a horrible friend but I just remember planning our wedding and I loved that some my friends were able to come with me to try on dresses.  and I remember being disappointed when friends flaked on me, as well.

could you fly?  that would probably be more of a PITA but maybe you could get a cheap flight.

  • I know how you feel, and I have felt that way many times.  But then I think "how will I feel after, will I regret going?" my answer is most always no and I always feel good after going and glad that I went, even if it was a hassel.
  • You're not a horrible friend.  I'm in a very similar predicament so I know how hard it can be and how bad you must feel.

When I got married I didn't expect my friends to drive across the state for all of the events that are wedding related.  There is enough expense involved with the mandatory things.  I'm sure she will understand if you talk to her and explain how you're feeling.  Maybe send her some flowers the morning of or a little card letting her know you're thinking of her.
