Recs for floating the river this summer!
Hi Austin Nesties!
We are taking a trip with a bunch of friends down to float the Guadalupe this summer and it's a first for a lot of us. I've been looking into what companies to rent through and what river but it's a bit overwhelming!
Hoping some of you might have some faves you go through or any other recommendations to make the trip easier and more fun!
Also would staying in a hotel in San Marcos be too far?
TIA!
Re: Recs for floating the river this summer!
Thanks! Comal sounds great because I also want a warmer river. We are wanting to spend the entire day floating so would this be a long enough one for that? Or do you have to start over often?
Looked into the condos and they are renovating until December.
ditto the comal. we almost always use Rockin' R's and they offer trips on both the 'lupe and the comal. both are nice, but i like the shorter ride on the comal so that if you're done (or sunburnt like i always am), you can stop instead of being stuck on an 8 hour float. it's also a nice break to grab lunch really quick and then get back out there.
have fun!
It's exhausting to float the river! I've done at 3 or 5 hour one and I was so tired I could barely drive home. And I was sober too from being the Designated Driver! I really wouldn't plan on doing it all day. Something about all that sun and the water. Could be just me though. Also, Even with a head to toe covering of 100+ SPF Sunblock, I never fail to miss some small sliver flesh. I've had a sunburn in the part of my hair and in my cleavage and even under my bikini. I know now to apply it all over naked first and reapply every 2 hours while floating. Bullfrog is the best for floating IMHO.
If you're going to be drinking alcohol, don't forget to pack gatorade(or other electrolyte replacement) and water safe munchies too. I've seen entirely too many people taken away by EMS at the end of the float with severe dehydration and or heat exhaustion. I saved a girl from drowning in her tube at the side of the river too. And I've almost been the person who needed saving during my river bachelorette party.
I live in New Braunfels and float the river A LOT!
I also prefer the Comal River. I find it is much easier, safer and fun!
That being said, I am doing the Guadalupe next!
If you have any specific questions, feel free to email me at TxGolfGal@aol.com.
dude, I live here too and float a lot (Kimberly, we need to make another girl's trip!), and all I have to say is: they're both freaking freezing. But I'd kill myself before I TUBED the Guadalupe.
I live in a 'hood w/ a park on the Guadalupe. The park is about 10 minutes from the end and if we go to the park just around 4 or 5pm, there are a lot of people who are pissed and drunk and angry that they're still floating, it's getting colder out, they are out of food/drinks/cigarettes/energy. They are 10 minutes from the end but they just want out. A lot of times they'll try to get out and walk to their cars (which would be at least an hour walk for most) just because they are THROUGH.
im the opposite - i really am not a big fan of the comal. it's too short in my mind and a little boring. plus the whole cooler situation is a little annoying.
i love floating the middle part of the guadalupe (between 4th and 2nd crossing). do NOT float the lower part (between the first crossing and gruene). this can get pretty rough in parts and then super sluggish and boring in other parts.
we usually use river road camp (located between the 1st and 2nd crossing) or bezek's (like txbabs mentioned above). i think bezek's is a family business of a former knottie too. when you go to these places on the middle part of the guadalupe you can tell them how long you want to be on the river and they'll drop you off at various points on the river so you finish at their location in that amount of time. this is nice too because then you don't have to catch a shuttle back to your car.
