I got an email from an out-of-state friend. They live in Massachusetts, but they're considering relocating to either Texas or NC. He's a paralegal that got laid off and has not had much luck finding anything new in Mass in that industry. What is the thought process of an HR rep when they see an out-of-state address on a resume? Do you skip right over it or do you actually consider that candidate?
I'm not able to provide much feedback to her because in my industry it is VERY common to be recruited/apply for out-of-state jobs. It's also common to be dangled the carrot of free relocation costs, so they are definitely not skittish with out-of-state applicants.
Same in other industries? What are your thoughts? Thanks for any feedback!!

Re: Hey HR peeps....[and lawyer folks too]
It probably depends on the company. I know our hiring committees prefer a local address since we don't pay for interview travel or relocation and we go through the process as quickly as possible. I work in HR for a college.
Larger companies are probably used to recruiting out of state so they won't pay as much attention. I would say a small law firm would prefer a local address if they are looking to hire immediately since the won't want to wait for travel arrangements, but that's just speculation.
