maui recs

Hi ladies,

I'm going back to Honolulu to visit family in May and the hubby and I decided to take a mini trip to Maui.

Any of you have recommendations as to which side of the island to stay and anything that is a must to do?

Thank muchness!

  • Lahaina has gotten really busy and crowded over the years =P So we always stay in Kihei. But if you want to stay in a more happening place, Lahaina is where you want to go. Otherwise, Kihei is a great place to stay if you're looking to relax more. Kaanapali is also a nice place to stay.

I love snorkeling in the Makena Beach area--you can see lots turtles there, especially in the morning =) Snorkeling at Molokini is good too. I also recommend checking out the Road to Hana (I love the banana bread at Halfway to Hana) and Haleakala National Park (if you like nature/sightseeing).

My favorite restaurant is Hali'imaile General Store (I go there EVERY time I visit Maui) and I also like Sansei (I go to the Kihei one) for their 1/2 price sushi =)

I *love* Maui. I'm jealous you're going =) HAVE FUN!!

  • We have family in Lahaina and usually stay on that side of the island.  The last time we went, we rented a condo in the Kahana area of Kaanapali.  It was on the beach and we could even see whales from our room!

We did the Road to Hana and although I probably wouldn't do it again, I am glad that we did and enjoyed it.  Stopping a lot and checking out the waterfalls and stuff helps break up the long drive and makes it so much more fun.  But, it was just a loooong ride and was something that took up pretty much an entire day.  I'm not sure how many days you're planning on spending there but it's something to consider if it's just going to be a super short trip.

I know a lot of people do the sunrise on Haleakala but I've always wanted to go for the sunset there.  It's supposed to be really beautiful too.  And you don't have to wake up super early!

  • We always stay in Kahana (at the Kahana Village)! It's sooo much quieter, and sooo many condos are on the ocean. If you can, try to book a night in one of the 3 cabins in Haleakala's crater. That's how we did sunrise, sunset AND watched the night sky go round. You can do the booking online - you do have to hike in, but it's totally worth it.

  • Thanks ladies!
