My mom works for the NYC Health Dept, testing vision and hearing testing in the schools. Over the years, she and her co-workers have come across many...interesting....names. Her friend writes down all the crazy names they come across and just sent me this hilarious email I thought I would share. These are all actual names of children that they have tested. No offense if you like any of these names or know someone who is actually named something in this list - I actually like a few of them too!
Your mom mentioned that you are still deciding on a
baby name and I thought I should share some of our favorites from the NYC
school system.
I notice that many people focus on a theme which is
particularly applicable in multiple births (hey, you never know) or for younger
siblings. For example, cars are a popular theme - Mercedes, Porsche,
Lincoln, Chevy or Nisaan to name a few. Since you guys tend to
be naturalists, maybe tree names would work - Banyan, Sequioa, or
Magnolia. Weather is cool too - Rain, Windy, Storm and of course,
Sunmoonstar (no joke)
Some couples revert to the moment of conception or
what led up to it - Moet, Chandon, Jameson, Remy, Rufino, Claret and even Miller
and Bud.
Of course you can also choose to combine names if
you really have trouble deciding. How about Skyalise, Rayjon, Raesean,
Rosibell, Dashawn, Wonvinie(maybe they meant Juan and Vinnie?) Osbert or
Jazzlyn.
My favorites tend to be the more emotion-evoking
names such as Jubilation, Miracle, Unique, Gift, Serenity, Peace , Pleasure,
Dream, Love, Shine and Deziyah (desire spelled phonetically).
Religious names have a place too - Trinity, Heaven
and the newly popular Neveah (which is heaven backwards - wouldn't that make a
kid feel good about themselves, why not just call them Hell?).
If you or Joe have any royal blood you may consider
King, Queenie, Princess or Duke.
Then there are the old favorites such as Male or
Female (pronounced Malay and Feemalay). I am partial to the more
avant-gard names like Karyme (carry me, which is what you will be doing anyway)
, *** [assshole, in case the nest deletes this] (pronounce asholay), Hebe (pronounced as spelled), Yucan
(as in YES, you can!), Herson (as opposed to HIS son), Nowah (the phonetic form
of Noah? I guess they had a typo in their Bible), Ciyu (like see you ---
later?), Justice , Jamesy and my all time fave is PHOEVA ( as in they lived
happily ever after forever and ever.
Good luck and have fun. Will keep you updated
on any more great names we encounter.

My MIL, an OB nurse had a patient named "Clinique" (pronounced Kwinique) and another patient who named her baby "Placenta"
I remember you told this story a long time ago and Placenta is still my all-time favorite baby name. I tell everyone about it. :-)
That's ok, it was AGES ago. I just loved it so much I remembered!!
Ha! My Mom was an OB nurse when we lived in NOLA, she had this same story! So funny. My sister also had a student in her class named ?Buttons?. I once had a student in my theatre school named ?Viagra?.
