Poll: How old is too old

To take your child, of the opposite sex, to the bathroom with you? I'm talking about in a setting like a mall or restaurant not a super crowded concert or sporting event. I was in a ladies room today with a woman and her 10? year old boy. I should add that the father was having dinner with them as well. I can maybe see walking the boy to the restroom but shouldn't he be able to go by himself? Maybe I'm way off here since I'm not a parent but I would think over 6y/o is pushing it and creepy.

Re: Poll: How old is too old

  • I have to agree with you. A similar thing happened when I was at Sam's Club a few weeks ago. I later saw them all walking around, the dad was with them, and I thought how weird it was the dad didn't at least take the boy into the men's room. This boy had to have been at least 10 y/o... maybe even 11 or 12. I say 10 because I hope he's not 12, but he really seemed older than 10.
  • Agreed. 1. The guy can get off his tushy and take sonny to the potty, and 2, sometimes happenings in ladies bathrooms are things I wouldn't want my 10 year old to see.  If you're standing outside the men's room, I doubt anyone can take off with a ten year old without you noticing.

Exactly.  I feel bad for men who take their daughters places.  A men's room is definitely no place for a little girl.

This reminds me of that scene from Three Men and a Little Lady where they try blind folding her before bringing her into the men's room at the mall.  :)

DH asks me about this all the time.  He's really concerned for when Caroline gets older.

This makes me wonder if they even have changing stations in men's restrooms.  I'll have to ask him.

And yeah, I totally think 10 is waaaay too old.  Lazy dad should have taken him.

  • A lot of places (malls and airports especially) will have Family restrooms, too.  You can always use those!
  • I agree - 10 is too old!

When my ex had my now 13 year old with him on outings years ago, he let her go into the ladies rest room and waited right outside the door....she was oh....maybe 5 years old or so....  She always wanted to be the "big girl" and didn't need his help.   Big Smile

So, I'd have to say... unless this 10 year old required assitance due to health reasons, 10 is a bit too old.

  • 10 is too old!

LOL at the Three Men and a Little Lady visual!

  • I take my 4 year old, but he still needs help.  Once he can do it by himself I will just stand outside the door.  I let my 8 year old nephew go by himself, and he even takes my son sometimes.  10 is WAY to old!

April - I think we can all agree, 4 is perfectly acceptable!

  • I think once they're old enough to not need help, letting them go alone & standing outside the door is better.  I'm guessing around 7ish?
