Just signed up for my first triathlon!

It's in about 5 weeks! Indifferent Hopefully I can get ready in time. It's a sprint distance, so even if I don't properly learn how to swim before then (ha!), I should be okay!  300m swim, 12 mile bike, 2 mile run. It should be a nice starter for me. I'm supposed to do the Danskin in June, but it has an 800m swim, and I'm not sure I even have a chance of finishing that!
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • That sounds awesome!

My doctor just told me that I'm not allowed to run marathons (ever-- boo) because of my chronic knee conditions, but suggested training for triathlons instead. I was pretty bummed last week when I found out, but now I'm excited to hear about the training/experience you have! Yay. Good luck!

  • Choo, I have bad knees, too. I've just recently tried running again. I'm up to half a mile pain free.  The bike has been the best thing ever for me because of my knees! I still can only go so long before pain, but with a bike, that threshold is more like 3 hours.

I usually ride about 6 miles a day at the gym on a regular basis, but I'm going to have to start stepping that up to about 10, I think, so the race won't be a shock.  And I'm gradually adding running in small spurts. It's the swimming I really need to work on!

  • Ooh-- I have to run (ok, drive) now, but I want to talk more about this knee thing. I'll page you when I get to CT in a couple of hours...

Congrats on the triathlon.  I've always been in awe of triathletes.

Practice several strokes while you're swimming.  Switching between freestyle, backtroke, and breaststroke always gives me fresh bursts of energy.  Plus, when you're swimming backstroke, you can constanly breathe, so it'll give you a chance to catch your breath.

  • Good tip, Steph. Thanks! I'll have my trainer show me the backstroke. I probably will be better at that since the breathing technique is what has always held me back!

  • Congrats!

I did a Super Sprint Tri in May 2008 -- 400m swim, 6 mile bike, 1 mile run. The swim was actually the easiest part for me...minus the jellyfish. Yes, the jellyfish. Ugh. Note to self: no more triathlons in May in San Diego.

    My tips:

-- Make sure your bike tires are inflated and that your brake isn't stuck. Make sure you check this before you ride 6 miles with a sorta flat tire and your back brake on the whole time.

-- They usually won't let you do backstroke during the tri (it's dangerous for the other competitors), but you can do sidestroke or doggy-paddle if you get super tired.

-- If you get tired during the run, it is okay to walk or jog slowly.

-- Have fun and totally gloat :) I remember finishing and thinking "Well, geez, that was nothing" but then totally ate it up when people told me how impressed they were.

  • SBS, the race rules follow USAT rules, which don't prohibit backstroke, but I could see the potential danger. I guess whether or not I'd want to use it would depend on the size of my wave.

Is it lame that although I know I can do the bike part easy, I'm scared of riding in a pack?  So many rules, so much potential for disaster! lol

Yeah...I got kicked in the chest once, the face twice, and my extremeties - legs and arms - countless times. Try to get out to the edge of the pack when you're swimming, or (especially if you're not worried about your time), try and stay waaaay at the back of the pack.
