any Canadians living in the US on this board?
I could ask on the 12-24 but I don't feel like "coming out" to them just yet. Weird? A little, I know.
So it looks like I am moving to NY for a few years. I wonder if we'll still get the 100 bucks for DS every month if we don't live here but still own property. Or if the RESP matching from the gov't stops if we don't live here.
I obvs need to do some reading and call someone but its hitting me how many questions I am starting to have about...everything.
I need to start writing this shiz down.
Re: any Canadians living in the US on this board?
Sounds great, what part of NY will you be moving to?
You must be a resident of Canada to receive the UCCB so you will stop receiving it.
As for the RESP, the CST adviser covered that with me a few weeks ago -- but I don't remember what she told me. I'll scan through the paperwork she gave me and see if I can find the answer somewhere. I'm pretty sure, again, you have to be a resident of Canada but not sure what happens in regards to the fund they've already matched....plus it sounds like your move is short-term so you should still be able to still max it out by the time your child is ready for college.
we'll be moving to Binghamton NY. We'll know for sure on April 30 what the plan is so I am trying not to stress myself out unnecessarily until then. It would be short term, probably 3-4 years. We'd come back to Canada for sure just maybe not Alberta (I am so over Calgary).
Makes sense about the UCCB, I figured that would stop. Thanks
I only lived in the States (NJ) for 4 months so nothing changed for me. I had to keep my apartment here to get my work visa and I was still paid in Canadian dollars. My company did cover a condo, food, gas and they gave me a car.
I had someone from work there to help me with all my questions. I had a relocation consultant to help with finding a place (she took me around) and to answer any questions I had about the area. I also had a lawyer who did my work visa application and answered any other legal questions I had.
Again that was all provided by my company. Does your husband's work have something similar?
Just so you know - if you become a "resident" of the US, and you have an RESP, you are going to be subject to a bunch of income tax reporting forms (I think they are 3571, but I can't recall offhand for sure) in the US because you will have a foreign "trust" (foreign to the US).
