anyone have trouble getting their IUDs inserted?

I finally made the appointment to get my IUD, took the late afternoon off work, and I think my body hates me! My Dr. wasn't able to get my cervix to dilate enough to get the IUD inserted today.  She said this sometimes happens with women who haven't had children, so she gave me a prescription for something that they often use with pregnant women to get the cervix to dilate and I'm going to try that before my next appointment.

Anyone else have any issues like this?  Did it eventually work out for you?  Any info or thoughts?

Re: anyone have trouble getting their IUDs inserted?

  • My OB gave me a perscription for something to dialate my cervix also. I took it the night before and it made me a little crampy, nothing bad at all. She didn't need to dialate my cervix at all the next morning. The instertion wasn't terrible by any means (I made FI go with me because I was so scared lol). There were a few moments when it hurt pretty bad, about a 6.5 on the pain scale and I had to squeeze FI's hand a few times. But after that I was okay. I stayed on the table for a few minutes to regain myself and left. Afterwards I had a few bad, crampy moments, but I was okay the rest of the day.
  • I didn't have any problems getting mine inserted but just wanted to recommend going in to have it inserted while on your period.  Then your cervix is naturally as dialated as it gets, that might help as well.  Good luck!

  • I had a difficult insertion, and I also was told that it's best to have it during your period when the cervix is softer (I didn't have mine inserted during my period).  I was given the cervical dilator as well and told to take it the morning of the appt.  It made me crampy too.

As I recently posted, I had to have mine out yesterday.  Because I had it inserted before I had ever had a baby, my uterus was too small and it created far too much blood loss.  I had a lot of problems because of the blood loss, because of my own health issues.  Anyway, just to let you know that many doctors recommend that IUDs only be used in women who have already had pregnancies of some considerable length (not sure it would have to be a full 9 months though) because of the heavy bleeding issue.

Like I posted, the removal was very easy and although it hurt, the pain lasted only 3 seconds or so.

  • I got my IUD in when I was 18, I had never had children so I also was given the medicine to induce cervical dilation. For me I did feel any affects of the medicine. When I went to get it inserted, the OBGYN got right to it, and didn't have any problems. Other than the fact I nearly passed out. If you haven't had children you naturally will be less dilated, which translates in to more pain. It's pretty bad, but worth it for 5 years of birth control that you don't have to constantly worry about. Good luck!
