We had our level II / 20 week ultrasound last week. In BC it's pretty standard that the U/S tech won't tell you anything and you'll have to follow up with your Dr. The U/S was low key, only about 15 mins (was told it would be 30 min) and we saw the baby waving and his/her cute profile. We knew that they won't tell you the sex of the baby until after 21 weeks along (I was 19w4d at the U/S) so I was expecting to call my Dr's office at 21 weeks to hear if it was a boy or a girl. Don't ask me why it is this way, I find it odd too... wouldn't it be easier if they would just tell us what was up right away?
Anyway, last week I also had a regular check up and asked my Dr. about traveling to Mexico (I had asked her previously and she said to see her a week prior to the trip so we can ensure I am okay to travel). She gave me the green light, HB was good, BP was good... she just said to tell the U/S tech that I would be traveling and if there was anything urgent to call my Dr. (whichI did). Fast forward to today, I'm thinking all is well because there was no call Friday and no call today until 5:15... just home from work, getting ready for our trip tomorrow. The receptionist says I have an appt. for a F/U ultrasound next Tuesday. I told her I would be out of town until Tuesday night, she then told me to call tomorrow to re-schedule... I told her I would be flying out early tomorrow am and then asked if it was urgent. She said they need to get a better view of the baby's heart...
I told her I was traveling and she said she would re-schedule me for Wed/Thurs next week. Now of course I'm feeling worried/concerned.... I also believe they would not let me travel if it was urgent and if I wasn't traveling I would be sitting at home waiting until the U/S on Tuesday anyway. Sigh... I was really hoping to go away with no worries but now I feel anxious, I can't help it. Thanks for listening ladies.
Re: BR, follow up U/S, a bit long.
Aw hon, don't stress too much. When we had our 20 week u/s, we had the same problem - we had to go back for a follow up u/s about a week and a half later because they needed a better look at one of the babies' hearts.
I was pretty worried even though they told me not to be - as it turned out, they weren't concerned that something was really wrong since the heartbeat, blood pressure and blood flow were all good, but the baby was positioned awkwardly and they couldn't get a good shot showing all four chambers, which they needed to have on record (my babies tend to squirm around a lot during scans, and they just couldn't get the right angle to confirm it 100%). We went back, the baby was more cooperative with positioning, and they confirmed that everything was fine and got the shot of all four chambers captured for their records.
So don't stress too much - as you said, if they thought it was really urgent, they'd be doing this u/s right away and wouldn't let you travel! I'm betting it was just a positioning problem.
As a side note - that IS weird about the sex!
Thank you Lisa! I really needed to talk to someone about it and MH is busy trying to finish things up at work... so glad I can post here and hear other's experiences. I guess my first instinct was to think "oh no!!", I am a worrier by nature anyway
I know, it is so odd, since so many ladies here go to that ultrasound and have all the info they need... sooo strange but protocol I guess.

I'm totally the same way! When we had to go back for the u/s, I was a big bundle of nerves but Ben was just like, "Eh, I'm sure everything is fine, they'd have told us something to warn us ahead of time if it wasn't." And he was right, but between the two of us, I'm definitely the worrier.

I'm with the other ladies and thinking that it was just a matter of not getting the right angle. When I went for my 20-week ultrasound, we ended up waiting almost an hour. There were a lot of other women waiting in the room so I just thought it was normally that busy. But when it was our turn, the doctor apologized for the delay and said that some unexpected complication had come up in another ultrasound and that it took much longer than it was supposed to. If your ultrasound tech thought she/he detected something serious, I'm sure that you would have heard about it much much sooner.
I'm sending you some good vibes so that you can try to relax and enjoy your babymoon!
Ian just said the SAME thing

I think this is probably true. We have two so it takes twice as long, and we still only average about 20-30 mins and that's for a detailed growth scan where they have to measure everything, etc. Well except for one time when the tech had a trainee tech in with them, so they went super slow (I think we were in there for an hour?) and explained everything to the trainee, which was actually kind of awesome.
Sorry you're worried Tara, I agree with the others they probably just need to get a better view of the baby's heart.
It's too bad they couldn't tell you on the phone so you weren't worried
Have a fantastic time on your trip!

Don't stress! I'm sure they just need to get a better view....that's all. I have a heart murmur myself, and I get an echocardiogram every few years. Last time I was halfway home when the hospital called me and told me to come back for some more shots. I panicked until I got there and they explained they just didn't get a good angle on this one shot. Everything was fine.
They wouldn't have cleared you for travel if they were worried!
