Neti Pot

Hey ladies, I know several of you have mentioned using a Neti Pot before, so I'm hoping someone can help me out. I got one because I get nasty allergies, and I have tried to use it a few times this season. While it does the job, I find it really unpleasant! I always get the water in my mouth and back of my throat which makes me have to stop and cough. I can't usually pour it for more than a second or two without having to stop. I've tried to adjust the position of my head but it doesn't seem to help. Is this normal? If not, do you have any tips??

Re: Neti Pot

  • It's normal only because your sinuses drain into the back of your throat.  Which kind of neti pot are you using?  The one that looks like a little tea pot?

    Some tips:

    1) Bend over the sink when you do it.  Don't tilt your head backward.

    2) Don't pour so fast.

    3) I actually prefer this product, which does the same thing, but it's a squeeze bottle where you can control the flow of water.  I'd suggest looking at this:

Good luck!  Don't give up - it really is worth it.

  • I agree...the squeeze bottle works way better for me too...but you will get some down the back of your throat!
My baby girl is a married woman...and now my baby girl HAS a baby girl. Time unfolds in such an amazing way. I've been blessed!
  • I use a netti pot (not the squeeze bottle) and find that if I make a constant huuuuuuuhhhhh sound, I don't get a drop down the back of my throat.  I also tip my head down and sort of at a 45 degree angle to normal (so not all the way over against my shoulder but not straight up either).  Not glamourous but mine helps my sinuses tremendously!

This too!  Just breath out through your mouth with a little more force than normal when you use the pot.

  • I use the squeeze bottle with warm water and salt (less than 1/4 tsp salt) and the past few times it has BURNED!  So I haven't done it in a while....why would it burn?

  • Scientifically - no clue.  But the instructions that came with my neti pot said that if you have that sensation, to scale back the salt.  Sometimes I get a headache if the water is too cold too?
  • Yes, adding too much salt will make it burn.  Essentially (returning to my high school biology here), the membranes in your nose are semipermeable membranes (meaning some things can go through, but not others).  What can go through is water.  What cannot go through is salt.

Thus, if the liquid in the neti pot is less salty than the liquid inside your membranes, the water will be drawn into the membranes of your nose, expanding the tissues.  You don't want this, because it will cause your nasal passages to close down and your nose to feel even more stopped up. (That's why you want to add salt to the water in the first place.)

If the liquid in the neti pot is about the same amount of saltiness as the liquids inside your nasal membranes, the liquid will wash out whatever is in your nose without affecting the tissues underneath at all.

Ideal is if the liquid in the neti pot is just a little more salty than the liquids inside your nasal membranes.  That way, not only do you wash out the gunk from the inside of your nose, but you shrink the nasal tissues.

However, if you make the liquid in the neti pot too salty, it draws liquid out of the nasal membranes too fast, causing the burning sensation.

I could give you some measurements for how salty the liquid in the neti pot should be.  However, the easiest way to figure it out is to taste some of the neti pot water before you start.  Ideal is if it is just a little more salty than your own tears would be.

I actually use an attachment to a Water Pik that is designed for nasal irrigation.  However, you can use anything that works (spray bottle, neti pot, squeeze bottle, etc.).  The important point is to use enough (about a pint of liquid), and to have it just salty enough.  You may also want to add a pinch of baking soda, which helps dissolve the mucous better.  And bending forward will definitely help keep the liquid out of the back of your mouth.
