what are you reading?

currently reading or just finished:

The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown - not as good as his other books I've read.

One Fifth Avenue by Candace Bushnell - perfect chic lit, snotty NYC setting, rich people/fashion/gossip type of book.

what's next:

i'm ready for some quick and light summer reads. i have the 3rd book Three to get Deadly in the Stephanie Plum series already so I'm going to start that. i do a lot of reading on my lunch breaks at the park.

I'd also like to read one of Chelse Handler's books. Any recommendation for which one?

Re: what are you reading?

  • I'm currently reading Holly's Inbox.  Chick lit, but not at all wordy, it's basically just back and forth emails.

I tried to read Are You There Vodka, It's Me Chelsea, and I really wanted to like it, but I thought it was really disappointingly unfunny & I finally gave up.

  • I love the Stephanie Plum series for something light and fun.

If you ever get nostalgic, I always recommend any of Bill Cosby's books for a good laugh out loud read.  Very light hearted and pretty quick...and since he's the Cos it's nice clean humor.

  • I am currently reading Cause Celeb by Helen Fielding (who wrote Bridget Jones) and I am liking it for a light read.

My go to author for summer reading is Marian Keyes. If you have never read Watermelon or Rachel's Holiday I highly recommend those. They are hilarious stories. I just read her latest, The Brightest Star in the Sky and I wasn't super impressed with that one but it was still mildly entertaining. I also just finished A Reliable Wife but didn't really care for it.

  • I've been in a reading slump lately.

But I started re-reading the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris. The books are quick pleasure reads. They aren't as good the second time around so I probably won't read them again, but I'll keep reading the new books she releases.

  • Push by Sapphire (Precious).  I saw the movie, but I knew things were left out.  WOW.  Hard read simply because it saddens me that children do live this way and it is written the way she speaks - like the Color Purple.  But I do recommend this book.

Also - still working on Dragonfly in Amber.

  • Currently reading:  Alice I Have Been by Melanie Benjamin (it's the story of the girl that inspired Alice in Wonderland) it started really slow (I mean really slow, almost had to stop slow) but now it's much better!!

Next Up:  Are You There God, It's Me Chelsea by Chelsea Handler (Leaving for a beach weekend Friday and I hope to read this laying in the sun!)

ETA: I read the Chelea Handler Horizontal Life: Collection of 1 Night Stands and it was pretty funny, but sort of gross at the same time.  I got over it and got some good laughs out of it.  I'm on hold for her new book at the library Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang whenever it comes in.

  • I'm currently reading Out of Africa.  It's always been on my "to read" list and I picked it up since one of the tasks on this quarter's book challenge over on the Book Club board is to read a book by an author born in the same month as you, which Isak Dinesen was.  I'm about 60 pages in and while I'm not totally captivated by the story, I am by the writing style - kind of like she's just sitting down telling stories; it's very conversational, IMO.

I'm also listening to Wait Till Next Year by Doris Kearns Goodwin.  It's a memoir about her growing-up years centered around her love of baseball and specifically the Dodgers (when they were the Brooklyn Dodgers in the post-WWII era).  I'm only on the first disc, but so far I'm really enjoying it.

Next up, I'm not sure - I have Comfort Food by Kate Jacobs and The Lion's Game by Nelson DeMille from the library so probably one of those.  Most likely Comfort Food since it's shorter!

  • I'm not *currently* reading anything since I'm at the point in my semester where I have a lot of final papers and projects going on. Next on my list is Bel Canto and possibly Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant. (I can't wait for the end of the semester- in part because I haven't read a book for fun in a couple months!)
  • I'm reading Drop Dead Beautiful by Jackie Collins...it's smut and not at all what I usually read.

I'm going to read Sarah's Key for bookclub next.

Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • I'm currently reading Midwives (still working on Apr's book).  Up next is Sarah's Key (May's book).

My non-book club to be reads include: Sloppy Firsts by Megan McCafferty,  A Summer Affair by Elin Hilderbrand & When A Man Loves A Weapon by Teri McGee Causey (Bobbie Faye book #3)

  • Currently Reading

The FE Supplied-Reference Handbook. It's by the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyers. It's been my go-to book of choice for months now and I'd like to chuck it out the window or burn it. Alas, I need it for a few more days to study for a test.

    What's next:

Something. Anything. Probably the book club book for May.

  • currently reading or just finished:

Currently: Angels and Demons by Dan Brown. I'm also reading Master Your Metabolism by Jillian Michaels... I just sort of read two or three chapters a night.

I just finished American Gods by Neil Gaiman... for the 8th time. It's one of my favorite books, I've read it quite a few times.

Katie, I *loved* One Fifth Avenue! That was an exciting book.

what's next: I'm not totally sure to be honest. I borrowed a bunch of books from a friend and one of them was Deception Point... I might give that one a shot. I tend to enjoy Dan Brown.
