Ooops!

Apparently 6 months without applying for jobs made me careless!  I made a few mistakes on a resume I sent out last week. No, not typos. (I'd never!) These were more functional/formality mistakes.  (1) I listed my name FirstName MaidenInitial LastName.  I added my bar card number in case they tried to look up my license. But I failed to actually put my entire maiden name on there. The problem? Some of my references don't know my married name! "Heather who?!" (2) I listed my current boss as my final reference. No big deal, right? Well, this is the first job I've ever applied for that they called my references BEFORE inviting me for an interview. I hadn't mentioned anything to my boss yet, so the phone call blindsided him a bit. Yes, I know you shouldn't ever list someone without checking with them first. That really was my biggest mistake. But I needed to get my resume in asap and he was out of the office for several days in a row (and never responds to my emails).

Oh well. He said he gave me a good reference, so that's good.  So now the question is, after all that preliminary checking on me, will they actually call me for an interview?!

We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

Re: Ooops!

  • Lesson learned, right? :)

Sending all job dust your way. If they're actually calling references, that seems like a positive thing.

  • I can't imagine them going through the trouble of calling references if they didn't have the intentions of an interview.  Hopefully their next call is to you to set something up!

  • I doubt they would be calling your references if they weren't interested in setting something up. I bet you will be getting a call from them soon!

  • I did talk to someone there briefly yesterday. He just called to ask about the nature of my current job (as I'm a contract/temp, they had questions). But nothing else.  My boss called him back sometime later in the day since he'd been out of the office all day.  This job has been posted for about 3 months without being filled, so I'm hopeful.  It would mean we'd have to get out of our lease early somehow and move, though. But it would be worth the hassle.

  • My fingers are crossed for you!

A new, permanent job would definitely be worth the hassle of breaking your lease.

  • Good luck Leigha! Sending job dust your way! Like pp's said, they wouldn't call references unless they were serious about calling you in for an interview.
