My friend met a couple from TO while on vacay 2 years ago. They've kept in touch and, when she's in TO (usually on business) they always get together. They have become pretty good friends. I have never met them.
They entered this online contest, made a video entry, and then started asking people to support them by casting their vote online for them. My friend passed this request onto me. I viewed their video and several others and, even though I didn't think their's was the best, I voted for them cause my friend asked me to. Now they have made it to round 2 of this contest and my friend sent me an email asking if I voted for them. Truth is, I haven't. I don't think their entry deserves to win. I basically told her that I voted for them the first time around but that I didn't feel right about doing it again b/c I thought other entries were better. Now she's mad at me. Like, wtf?! I don't even know these people!
Re: Tell me what you think of this
Depends on the contest, I suppose. I am voting for a friend's bathroom (being the worst bathroom so they can get a free renovation) even though it doesn't look the worst. Why shouldn't he win?
I just don't like the idea of these online contests. It's not awarded on merit, at all. It's all about who has the biggest network to support them, regardless of whether (in this case) they put forward the most compelling application/entry. It just left a bad taste in my mouth. I didn't vote at all the second round, I thought it would have been spiteful to vote against them.

This is what I thought *afterwards*! lol
I probably would have told the white lie, because I avoid any hint of confrontation like the plague, but kudos to you for your honesty. I'm serious -- I admire people who tell it like it is.
