Can't Decide!!! (Baby Shower)

Okay, so, everyone around me (except me...still not sharing anyone's water!) is having a baby. For my aunt's shower, I made a diaper cake. Last night, we threw a surprise in-class baby shower for my friends in the program who are expecting. On Sunday, I'm going to ANOTHER baby shower.

I was going to make a diaper cake again, but it's made with disposable diapers and I think they want to try and do cloth. Now, plenty of parents keep telling me "Even if they do cloth, they'll need/want a few disposables" so I know it will at least be a little useful. But I also feel kinda weird showing up with something centered around disposable diapers when I know they're planning cloth.

But then, as I was flipping through some craft blogs this morning, I saw a little no-sew fleece baby blanket that was SO cute. I've never made one before, and I think it might be fun to try...but I'm worried I'll spend a good chunk of money/time and it'll suck.

At this point, I've bought nothing. All of this will be taken care of this week at some point. The shower is on Sunday.

So, here's my ideas:

1) Make the diaper cake I was planning on making

2) Make the no-sew blanket

3) Make a smaller no-sew blanket (more receiving blanket size rather than full size) and a mini-diaper cake (maybe 2 tiers instead of 3 -- less disposables that way)

4) Forget being creative and just buy something lame off the registry

I am going in on this gift with someone. Well, a friend of mine who's going to the shower (she's a newer friend of our preggo friend, and I think she feels a bit out of place) offered to pay for half of whatever I get. She doesn't care which option I choose.

What do you all think? (New moms/mom-to-bes, I'd love your feedback especially!)

Re: Can't Decide!!! (Baby Shower)

  • I vote #4 and possibly adding the mini-diaper cake. I think the diaper cake is a cute idea, but if it were me (since I'm doing cloth too), my preference would be something off the registry. A lot of people don't buy off the registry and although it's nice to get random gifts too, it's great when you can actually get something you need/want.

  • Could the diaper cake be made with cloth diapers?

I found this site that says it will work with cloth but I don't know if the one you planned on making is similar...

In my family, we have so many people making blankets that we actually did not register for any.  We already have 5 and I know about 6 more are being made.  I would say diaper cake is my first choice, then look at the registry.  If they didn't register for blankets it is probably because they are in the same boat we are.

Another idea that I saw recently was a premade scrapbook with sleeves the new mom could slide pictures into.  They also included space for her to make notes by a lot of the pics.  If your friend is not a scrapbooker/as crafty, I think this would be a good option.

  • Maybe you could still make something, but use different baby essentials.

I saw a thread on D&R months ago, and saved these ideas:

  • I say a modified #3 - make a mini-disposable diaper cake and get something little off the registry. And she may have a blanket on there already so you wouldn't have to go to the trouble of making one
  • Thanks for the feedback ladies! I'm leaning towards what gmk suggested, and doing a mini-diaper cake with something small from the registry also. I'll save the blanket project for another gift :)
