Austin or San Antonio for anniversary?

Hi ladies!

DH and I moved to Dallas about a year ago and have not really ventured anywhere else in the state, since we had a baby about 9 months ago.  We would like to go to either Austin or San Antonio for a short trip (sans baby!) for our anniversary--just 2-3 days.  Which would you recommend?  Also--what do you recommend doing in either city?  Activities, restaurant recommendations?

Thanks so much!!  We're so excited for a little get-a-way!!

Re: Austin or San Antonio for anniversary?

  • That is a toughie!

I would vote San Antonio if you have never been. Stay on the river, check out the Alamo, the riverwalk and do the river boat cruise. In my opinion what is there is more limited than Austin. However, I think it would be very tough to go to San Antonio with a baby/stroller (lots of stairs/tighter spaces)...where as Austin is more baby friendly. Overall Austin is my fav but San Antonio is a must see if that makes sense?

  • I agree with SA for anniversary trip. I love Austin though. Stay on the Riverwalk, Hotel Contessa is a nice one. If Zuni Grill is still open on the RW try it, upscale mexican with a great cactus margarita! Also, there is cuban hotel too, forgot the name!!!!

Edit** The Havana Riverwalk Inn is the name of the other hotel!

  • I agree w/ pp.  Love Austin but I think SA would be better for what you are looking for.
  • We went to SA for our honeymoon! It's pretty.

Go to the top of the tower in Hemesphire park and get a Cloud 9! Yummy! (limit yourself to two if youre a lighweight like me)

Also eat at Lulu's, its a little off the map, but its good diner cooking, with cinnamon rolls so big they were on Food Network! (DH and I ate less than a quarter of it and were stuffed!!)

Shop at the Market for (some) good Mexican crafts.

Go to the Mirror Maze across from the Alamo...cheesy, but also pretty awesome!!
