Winston-Salem Nesties!

Winston-Salem here we come!

My fiance will be attending Wake Forest's Law School so we're heading down there in August! So really anything you can tell me about it would be awesome.

W're currently looking for an apartment pretty close to campus. So if you know of any places that would be great. We're trying to look for somewhere pet friendly but it's not required!

I have only driven through North Carolina so I know nothing about it. Does anyone know of any clubs or anything or really anything/anywhere to meet people? I'm a VERY social person and going somewhere where I dont know anyone is worrying me!

and I'm going to need a job! (law school is expensive!)

 Thanks in advance!!

Re: Winston-Salem Nesties!

  • Welcome to NC!  I grew up near W-S but unfortunately I don't have a lot of recs when it comes to places to live.  I graduated from Wake (undergrad) but it was long enough ago that I don't know if my old haunts are still good places to go.  We mainly went to bars and small music venues.

Good luck with law school, and hopefully someone on this board will be able to give you great recommendations.

  • I grew up in Winston and lived there until about 5 years ago.  I love it and still miss it!

I'm not sure I can offer any advice on where to live, either.  I never really lived in that area of town, so I don't know the apartment complexes at all!

I also don't know if the places we used to go are still good!  I know some of them are closed, but I do try to follow the social scene there and it seems like new places are always opening.  One really good resource is Smitty's Notes.    The website has lots of good info on everything from shopping to restaurants to clubs to volunteer opportunities.  You can also sign up for his weekly newsletter, which highlights a couple of events and always links to a more extensive calendar.

Since you're arriving in August, you'll be there for the tail end of the Music in the Streets series.  There is live music downtown every Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  Thursdays are more pop/rock bands and the crowd is mostly young professionals.  Fridays are jazz groups and Saturdays are a mix.  The crowd Fridays and Saturdays is a mix, too - everyone from families to young professionals to people in their 50's & 60's and beyond.  I was in a volunteer group that often staffed the bars at the events and they were always my favorite part of summer in Winston.

As far as meeting people, I think volunteering is a great way to do it.  Though I grew up in Winston, I went to a high school that was also a boarding school, so many of my HS friends weren't from there to begin with.  When I returned after college, many of my local friends had moved away, or we'd lost touch.  So, it was almost like I was new to town in terms of meeting people.  I joined the Jaycees and met so many great people, some of whom are still close friends today (even though I don't live there anymore).  That specific group may not be for you, but I think finding one that's a fit for your interests is a great way to meet new people.  I regret that we haven't found a similar group in any place we've lived since.  It's made it a lot harder to make friends.

  • I'm in WS. So welcome! I can't really help you with housing, because I don't really know anything about the apartments. I second the above mentioned smitty's notes. Love it! Our ball team just got a new park, so you could head over there. Downtown has been going through significant revitalization over the last few years. Just head downtown and you'll find something to do! I don't get out much anymore since I have two young kids, but I think you'll easily find stuff to do.

Also - try meetup.com and search for specific groups, activities, or just young married groups.
