Moving to Texas in a month....
My husband Scott's been in Frisco the last year. He works in Little Elm. My job is transferring me to Irving so we're looking for a good place to live. I'm not a fan of the frisco/plano area. We're actually looking to rent a house; preferably with a nice backyard.
Any suggestions where both of our commutes might not be horrible? After working in Manhattan I'd really rather not have a crazy commute anymore.
Re: Moving to Texas in a month....
Between Irving-Little Elm:
The Colony
Lewisville
Coppell
thanks!
Usually when we move for his job I don't work immediately and have plenty of time to comb the areas but luckily this time my company has an office there and they are letting me relocate.
So this will be the first time in 6+ years that I'm working as soon as I get there...
what do you not like about frisco/plano area? Not trying to sell you on that area (I live in Coppell and love it here!) but just wanted to make sure the areas we are recommending fit your needs.
I vote for Las Colinas, my husband and I used to live there and it seriously 15-20 mins away from everything in the metroplex and is a very nice area as well. We would love to move back but with both our families in Fort Worth and planning on babies we wanted to be closer to our family/babysitters
Another thing is that every major highway is right there or pretty close, it has 114, 635, and George Bush Tollway, Dallas Tollway 5 mins away, and 75 10 mins away.
Thanks Ladies! I'll start looking.
What I didn't like about Frisco/Plano area is it's too cookie cutter for my taste. I'm not a fan of the strip mall. And the area where my husband lives the strip malls are identical. We like to be very close to restaurants (and preferably not chain ones if at all possible), theaters, museums, zoos etc. We don't have kids and even if we have any we probably won't be raising them in Texas so school systems aren't important to us. Personally I'd prefer to be closer to the downtown area (although I'd be happy with a quick commute to it)
Oh I forgot to mention the most important part. I'd ABSOLUTELY love to be close to a really great farmers market. I'd give up just about everything if I could get fresh seafood (a cool fish market works), fresh local veggies (I love my CSA here), fresh local chickens/beef/lamb and not have to shop at big box grocery stores except for staples.
We're clean eaters and I spend all of my free time cooking and playing with new recipes so if I could have a great place to shop for ingredients I'd be happy.
Ditto Meg. It sounds like you'd prefer Dallas-Dallas which is FAR (IMO) from Little Elm and a bit of a drive from Irving.
Coppell has a nice little Farmer's Market open on Saturdays during the spring/summer (since we mentioned that suburb previously), but not too many little local fish markets (if any?) - that's for sure!
Central Market is a great Texas local gourmet grocery store. There's a ton of Whole Foods around and Sprouts. New Flower is another one that you might like.
We live in Kessler Park and it's a lot of what the OP is looking for except the commute to Little Elm would be brutal. DH commutes to Irving everyday and it takes him about 25 minutes. I would look into North Dallas. It wouldn't be as cookie cutter as the burbs but it also would not have the same indy vibe as N. Oak Cliff.
I think that would be mostly true- except it is still quite a distance. I would think that also, driving from Dallas to Irving (a much closer drive) would also be against traffic but I'm not sure about that one.
Even with a reverse commute it would take at least 45 minutes to get to Little Elm from N. Oak Cliff if you took the tollway and paid toll charges both ways. If you took a free route it would be well over an hour. You can map it on google and drag and drop different routes for an estimated time.
FWIW N. Oak Cliff still lacks a great deal of retail and a lot of people shop further north at Whole Foods or Central Market. There is a farmers market downtown and a small weekend market at Bolsa. Several new developments are in the works but with the economy I'm not sure they will get built. The Sylvan | Thirty project is the most promising. I'm not sure when it's expected to be completed though. http://www.oaxacallc.com/sylvanthirty.html
If you're really interested in Kessler Park I suggest booking a stay at the Belmont Hotel ( http://www.belmontdallas.com/ ) during the week. You could then both drive into your offices during the same time you would normally commute.
You can also PM with any questions.
thanks a bunch missjane!
We have a bit of time. I don't get there untill the end of May and his lease isn't up until the middle of July
but since we'll both be working and we have several trips planned for the summer I wanted to get a jump on things.
