Question for people who fly a lot
I didn't want to post this on the Travel board because it's a really dumb question.
In 1.5 weeks we're flying from Freeport, Grand Bahama to Buffalo. From Freeport to Miami we're flying Bahamas Air. From Miami to Buffalo we're flying American Airlines.
DH says that because it's two different airlines, we have to pick up our baggage at baggage claim in Miami, then go through security again.
But I always thought they transferred luggage for you. Am I wrong? Do we have to drag our butts and Mittens through security again?
PS: Never flown American before, do they charge for drinks? I'm going to need a stiff one after dragging Mittens through security twice!!

Re: Question for people who fly a lot
good question. i've grown up flying a ton, and you've somewhat stumped me. logically, it wouldn't make sense to make you go back through the airport to baggage claim and recheck everything. when i flew from pgh-paris with a stop in philly, we just went right to the paris gate. our luggage showed up in paris. course, it was the same airline. but i would think that same rules would apply.
as for the drinks-i don't know an airline that doesn't charge for alcoholic beverages unless you're in first class. i could be wrong. i know before we left for mexico for our HM i was on airtran's website to see what they offered and what they didn't ($5 for internet access in the air was well worth it to me, so i was happy to read that!).
have a safe trip!
(and yes, i am trying to quietly tip toe around TN again, until it blows up in my face again and my online stalkers are back at their old tricks)
We'll all enjoy your company while you're here
We flew an airline down to our HM that didn't charge for drinks. I can't remember which airline it was though and we definitely weren't in 1st class. Also had free snacks! Huge bags of peanuts and 100 calorie packs. It was a treat.

thats a great question. i have never had to switch carriers before. we will be doing this in may though when we go to st croix. i guess i should call the airline's and ask them.
i have never flown on a airline that offered free liquor
much to my dismay lol

Panda, short answer, yes. You will have to everything all over again. You will check in with the first airline, go collect your baggage in Miami and then check in with the second airline to go through security again. The two airlines just don't have the ability to communicate with each other and transfer your bags. Sorry
.
As for drinks and snacks, I think American still has free soda/pretzels. Alcohol is never free and must be paid for with cash.
Good luck!

Ditto eskamo, you'll have to do it twice
I've never been to the Bahamas, but do you have to clear customs when you come into the US also? I've flown a lot back and forth to Europe and it's always 1) baggage claim 2) customs 3) the next flight.
And if it's a long enough flight, yes you'll have beverages and snacks. The only flight I've ever been on that didn't give us refreshments of any sort was a commuter flight from JFK to Connecticut.

Thanks for the clear answers! I filled out a custom sheet on the way in, so I know how to do that. But we actually go through customs before we leave the Island, so we don't have to do customs in Miami. The Freeport airport has a separate terminal for flights to the US (because there are so many!) and it gets customs out of the way.
PS: Eskamo, there are zero Sonics in Upstate NY.

At least where I'm from, and I imagine it will be the same where you're going, there are a lot of mom and pop ice cream places that open seasonally in the summer. Try those out, a lot are quite good.
Or, alternatively, Friendly's is pretty good, too. Their service is usually slow but I find it to be worth it.

we just got a couple of sonic's here locally..but i have yet to make a field trip to go check them out. at least the sonic commercials on tv don't make me angry bc we don't have any around us anymore!
i heart friendly's. we don't have any of those around here either, but they are on the other side of the state (where we lived for awhile when i was little), so i have fond memories of dessert at friendly's. mmMMMMmmm.
