Yesterday my husband and I took the day off work so we could run some errands. We decided to swing by the Tri-County mall around 11am. It's probably been a year since I was there.
W.O.W.
I was visibly shocked by how empty it was and I don't mean that it was void of people. There are so many empty spaces! And some of the stores that are there are really low-quality, especially the accessory stores.
Of course, they still have a number of quality stores and the department stores, too. I was just so amazed and sad. I suppose when you see it happen gradually it's not quite as shocking.
Re: Tri-County Mall
Shoot, I remember about 10 years ago or so, it was such a nice mall. I'd go out of my way to go there.
Then I moved to Kentucky and hadn't been in several years. Went back about... 1 or 2 years ago, and was shocked. It wasn't as empty as you described, but the stores had changed a lot, and many were lower quality stuff, like you mentioned.
Sad.
Oh yeah I totally feel you there. There is nothing really worth shopping for there and I'll only go to Tri-County if we're already in that area or the other locations are sold out. Since fewer ppl go to Tri-County, I've found them to have better selection and availability of limited goods. Last time I went with my husband there were a lot of ghetto people (supposedly gangs - don't wear a bandana or you might be mistaken identity!) there and lots of security, too. It almost felt unsafe in a way.
Back in my high school days about a decade ago Tri-County was my favorite mall and I'd drive an extra 20 mins to go there (vs. Northgate or Forest Fair/Cincinnati Mills). It seems that our malls are progressively getting fewer stores and more ghetto. The only mall I'll go to now is Kenwood and there are SO many people there on a weekend that its a total headache and all I want to do is get in and get back out (vs. leisurely window shopping). Sometimes it takes like 15-20 mins just to find a parking place!

Tri-County has really gone down hill over the years. I can remember back in the day having my Mom drop me and a BFF off at the mall for a day of shopping and getting our nails done. We literally would blow all our babysitting money there on a weekly basis. I would never let my 14 year old walk around that mall alone now. I am nervous walking in there and I'm 24! My neighbor is actually a mall cop at Tri-Count and we often joke that he probably handles more things than our neighbor who is an actual cop.
I do agree with the pp that it seems like most of the malls are starting to fail. I think with outlets so close and the way the economy is no one really can afford to pay full price for things anymore.
I can guarantee that there are no issues with gang activity at Tri-County Mall. Personally, I go there fairly often for Macy's and Gymboree. There is plenty of security and they do have off-duty cops there on weekend nights, but I don't really feel unsafe there.
It does make me sad to see all the empty storefronts. It's mostly due to Bridgewater Falls and the preference now for outdoor "lifestyle centers," which is interesting because many of those (I'm thinking specifically of Deerfield) have their share of empty storefronts too. It makes you wonder if the pendulum will swing back and people will want to shop at traditional malls again, or if some new better thing will come along.

Agree. I make quick trips to Northgate and Tri County fairly regularly and basically stick to the large stores. But seriously, the nice atmosphere has gone way down over the years. Kenwood, Rookwood and Deerfield Twp malls are "fancy" in my book but sometimes it's a pain to drive there from my house.
