I thought you might be interested to see that the voters here have yet again voted for Bill Jefferson. He is now in a runoff scheduled for Nov. 4th which due to the racial makeup of the vote and how heavy it will be that day he is likely to win. If so he will probably win the general election in December considering he is running against total unknowns.

I couldn't vote Saturday since they have recently closed the primaries and still won't be able to for the runoff as a Republican.

At least his trial starts in December and chances are he will be found guilty. In the meantime, his brother, his sister and niece have been indicted for corruption charges on another matter not related to him. His whole family has issues.

What is also interestng if you read the article, it does talk about the race issue. Black voters still distrust government. Voters still vote along racial lines.

  • Indifferent

I shouldn't be surprised given what happened in Detroit with our Mayor - it took him being hauled off to prison for people to "get" that he shouldn't be mayor anymore. I think I'm more surprised the Dem party didn't find a replacement candidate. If he goes to jail he'll have to forfeit his seat right? Then what happens? Does Jindal appoint a replacement? If so I might be ok with that!!

Why aren't you allowed to vote in the runoff? Is it just a Dem runoff?

  • A couple of years ago Louisiana went back to closed primaries so as a Republican I don't get to vote in the runoff either. But I will vote in December when the winner of the runoff faces the other candidates - ALL unknowns even the Republican candidate. And remember this is a district that is 67% Democrat and 62% African American so Bill will probably win.

With the field of 8 candidates and 7 of them black males, they splilt the vote. Their egos were too big to find the one candidate to support! I doubt they will be endorsing the white woman who will be in the runoff with Jefferson because I am hearing that they all want another shot at the office after $ Bill steps down. So I am thinking Jindal does not get to appoint. I will have to research it later but I've got to give a midterm in a few minutes.

Intereseting his trial starts around the same time of the general election in early December. Pelosi has already kicked him off his committees including the House Ways & Means Committee. He has been totally ineffective. But this isn't about effectiveness and I know living where you do you can understand how the voters here feel.
