Re: Starting New Post - Calling All Paragard Users

  • I have had it for about 2 months.  I can't remember the exact cost, but all I had to pay was $25, insurance covered the rest.

Insertion was rough, but over quickly.  I almost passed out.  I had terrible cramping for about 12 hours, by the next day I felt much better.  I took 800 mg of motrin and a xanex before the procedure.  She also numbed my cervix, since I have never had children.

I immediately had a period from withdrawal bleeding from Implanon 2 days later..  It lasted about 7 days.  I am currently on my third period.  The last one was about 6 days.  My bleeding is heaver than it was, but not terrible.  I saturate at super tampon in 4-6 hours.  I have not experienced any cramping since the day of insertion.

When I went back to have my string checked, my doctor told me to take aleeve or motring around the clock, even if I am not cramping.  She said it should shorten the number of days I bleed.  I am trying it this time to see if it works.

Even with the extended and heavier bleeding I would do it over again in the blink of an eye.  Thats a small price to pay for 10-12 years of maintanence free birthcontrol.

How long have you had it?  1 1/2yrs

How much did it cost?  Does insurance cover any/all of it? $750 w/o insurance. With ins. it would have been $400 (at the time we (work) were in the middle of changing ins plans and I already had my appt. set up for the IUD and I didn't want to change it. I had the $$ so, I just went ahead and did it w/o ins.

Did you experience heavier bleeding/longer periods? Yes and no. I was on bcp for 15yrs so I really don't remember my periods before bcp. Yes in that my periods are heavier (going though super tampon in 4hrs on days 2&3) day 1 is very light,2&3 are really heavy,4 is normal,5 very light and then done. As for length of period, same as when I was on bcp

Did you experience bad cramping?  Is this every period or just the first couple months after getting the Paragard? Bad bad cramps on day 1 sometimes day 2 it varies. Pretty much every month. I think in the time I've had it I've only not cramped real bad maybe 2 or 3 times. I just take some ibuprophin (sp?) and I'm good to go.

Tell me other things you like about it. No hormons (they make me nuts. Cheaper than bcp over 10yrs time (my calculation *cost w/o insurance* was that in 2 1/2 yrs time it will pay for itself). No worries of missed pills. One less thing to have to worry about packing when we go away.

Telll me other things you dislike about it. My periods are not regular. I can no longer control/change when I get my period like I could on bcp (this has been an issue on a couple of our trips). My flow is heavier and I get cramps now where as on bcp my flow was light and no cramps.

If I had to do it all over again (I might since dh is ehhh about getting snipped *we never want kids*) I would. I love it. The pros outweigh the cons for me.

    Thanks all!

This seems like questionable advice. I wouldn't want to get dependent on painkillers....

How long have you had it? I no longer have it, but I had it for about 4 months

How much did it cost?  Does insurance cover any/all of it? My insurance covered it all

Did you experience heavier bleeding/longer periods? My periods were MUCH heavier and more painful. They also lasted about 8 days instead of my normal 5.

Did you experience bad cramping?  Is this every period or just the first couple months after getting the Paragard? I had pretty terrible cramping during my periods and had to take ibuprofen non-stop. I also would get cramps when I wasn't having my period. Nothing debilitating, but enough to be annoying.

Tell me other things you like about it: I guess it was nice to not have hormones or worry about condoms.

Tell me other things you dislike about it: Terrible periods...and cramping in between.

  • Its not about the pain killing properties, its about the antiflamatory properties.  She said once my body gets used to it in about 6 onths it should settle down on its own.
  • Hi, I have had mine for almost 3 years now.  I think I paid either $200 or $300 for mine after insurance paid some. I bled/spotted for 6 weeks after getting it, but then stopped. I did have heavier periods for many months, but it's worth it to me. I still have a bit more cramping and general pms symptoms the week before, but like I said, totally worth it. I love not having to think about bc, and stress about possibly getting pregnant. I definitely recommend it.
  • I did use it at one point in time a few years ago.

My cost was $90 plus the co-pay for the insertion.

I know they are saying it is okay to get the IUD if you have not had a child, but I would say otherwise.  My insertion was an experience I also almost passed out, but from what I was told this is fairly common.  I had terrible cramping that never really went away.  My period was out of this world heavy (I was going through a super tampon every hour).  After a month I decided I wanted it out since I never felt right after it was inserted.  The doc went to take it out and couldn't find it.  I went through so many tests to "find" it that I spent probably close to $400 total.  In the end they determined my body got rid of it on its own (spontaneous expulsion).  There is a higher rate for this if you have never had children.

My experience was one of the worst in my life.  They won't ever prescribe an IUD for me again because of the expulsion, not that I would want it anyway.

My husband and I use NFP now and couldn't be happier.  Been using NFP for 3 years and we had one planned pregnancy that ended in miscarriage and no other pregnancies planned or unplanned since.

  • Hi Meg! I wanted to answer your questions because I was a Paragard user and cannot say enough good things about it.

How long have you had it? I got the Paragard put in during the fall of 2005 and just recently (about 1 month ago) got it taken out because my DH and I are ready to start a family.

How much did it cost?  Does insurance cover any/all of it? For me, I could not use hormonal bc so insurance covered all of it for me

Did you experience heavier bleeding/longer periods? While having Paragard as my bc I noticed heavier but shorter periods. My periods were usually 5-6 days, but with Paragard it shortened to about 3-4 days.

Did you experience bad cramping?  Is this every period or just the first couple months after getting the Paragard? Before Paragard I never had cramping, and after I didn't really notice anything but a slight back pain around day 1.

Tell me other things you like about it. I love the idea of no pill every day, it lasts for 10 years, and it gave me complete piece of mind

Tell me other things you dislike about it. I honestly don't have anything bad to say. The only midly annoying thing is having to check for the strings every month, but other than that, it's definitely worth it! At least it was for me!

How long have you had it?

    5 years

How much did it cost?  Does insurance cover any/all of it?

It cost my regular co-pay, plus 1 follow-up appointment co-pay to make sure it was getting settled in properly.

Did you experience heavier bleeding/longer periods?

Did you experience bad cramping?  Is this every period or just the first couple months after getting the Paragard?

Yes to both. My periods were very light and short before with maybe one day of a super-mild backache. For the first year with the Paragard they were *much* heavier with several days of bad cramps. After the first year they settled down some but are still much worse than before. Stick-on heating pads and pain killers at the first twinge of a cramp were what helps most.

Tell me other things you like about it.

Not having to think about it. After my period I check to make sure the strings are still there, but that's it. And, no hormones to interfere with the other meds I'm on.

Tell me other things you dislike about it.

Just the cramps/heavier periods. I like to joke that I love it for 3 weeks of the month. I asked the doctor about getting one when my husband and I had first started dating, and they didn't want to give me one because of the risk of STIs. A couple of years later, with a different doctor at the same clinic, it was no problem.

    Tell me more about it!

How long have you had it?

     8 months

How much did it cost?  Does insurance cover any/all of it?

I had to pay my copay of 30 dollars.

Did you experience heavier bleeding/longer periods?

Yes. Yes. Yes. My periods started out at about 9 days, and they are down to 7 days. Day 2 or 3, I am typically changing a super tampon every couple of hours.

Did you experience bad cramping?  Is this every period or just the first couple months after getting the Paragard?

Yes. The first three or four months I really had to be on top of ibuprofen. I still get cramps, but they are generally not that bad, only lasting a day or two around my period.

Tell me other things you like about it.

I haven't had to think about my birth control for 8 months. I haven't had to worry about making sure I had enough on hand when I went on vacation, and I haven't gone to Walgreens in 8 months. I enjoy the freedom, and I haven't had any "negative" side effects. I am also excited that when DH and I want to have kids, I can get it removed any time any day of the week, unlike hormonal BC where you should wait until you finish the month.

Tell me other things you dislike about it.

After getting off of hormonal BC, I practically went through puberty again. I had horrendous acne, that is just now starting to calm down.  The cramps were pretty debilitating at first. I bleed. Alot. :-/

    Thanks all!

All in all, I still like it better than hormonal BC. It gives me better peace of mind, and every month has been a little bit better than the last.
