Poll: Vacation plans this year (and a little AW)

I've got vacation on the brain as I've been immersed in trip planning the last few days.  Plus, summer's coming (I know it's hard to tell today, but I swear it's coming!) and that always makes me think of vacations.

So, if you've got travel plans, share!  I'm always looking for ideas of where to go next :)

The AW part is that I just booked two trips for me and DH.  We haven't gone on a real vacation in about four years, which is sad given how high a priority traveling is for us.  Weddings and their associated costs have been eating up our budget and vacation time, but this year we decided we're going on a real trip come hell or high water!  So...I just booked our Greece flights a couple of days ago AND a friend of mine decided to do a last-minute wedding in Barbados and we're going there too!  Woohoo, I'm so excited to hit the road again!

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

Re: Poll: Vacation plans this year (and a little AW)

  • We're going to Italy!!  We leave in 3 weeks!

We'll hit Venice, Florence, Naples/Coast/Capri, and Rome with some day trips to Pompeii and hopefully Cinque Terre in there.

    I can not WAIT

  • Awesome!

We leave for Punta Cana Sunday.

  • Wow! You guys are just going everywhere! Italy: sooo jealous! That's my next stop. And right after that - Greece.

I think DH and I will be taking small trips throughout the year before his (most likely) deployment. We're definitely going back to the Seneca Lake wine region in New York. Maybe take a weekend to Freeport, Maine (Wicked Whoopies! When Pigs Fly! Outlet shopping! Stick out tongue)

Other than that, nothing set in stone yet.

  • Oh, Greece! I want to go there. And Barbados sounds so relaxing.

We're going to Hawaii in September for our 2-year anniversary! I was so excited while planning it earlier this year, but now is a lull while we just want for it to get here.

  • * jealous * I want to go to all those places! We had a vacation a month ago... but we spent more than 1/2 of it with family so not a real vacation.

I have a week off in August because we're hosting my grandmother's 90th party and we have family flying in from all over for the week.

Other than that, nada. Hoping we do something for our 2nd anniversary in September as our 1st was spent with family. I love them but we can't escape them.

Oh gosh Iove Italy!  It was one of the best vacations I have ever taken.

So far H and I have no plans other than visiting my SIL in San Diego over Thanksgiving.

  • We're not going away, but I'll be having a baby and then on maternity leave half the summer, so I think that makes up for it hehe.

  • That sounds fantastic, and I'm totally jealous!  Greece is definitely on my list.

We don't really have anything in the works since we'll conceivably be moving in the next two/three months.  And one of my job prospects entails some traveling.

For our anniversary last year we did a cruise with another couple, which was fun, but I don't think I'm a cruise person.

If I had my druthers we'd head to Costa Rica, I've been wanting to go for awhile now so that would be our next "big" vacation.

  • It sounds like people have some great travel plans!

Punky, I'm jealous you're leaving so soon.

MrsT, I loved Italy when I went and can't wait to go back (both to Italy and to Western Europe in general).

MrsC, Hawaii is always amazing of course, have fun!

Buckeye, Costa Rica is great. I dream of the Tabacon hot springs in Arenal.  Hopefully you'll have a chance to go soon! And update us on your job/move stuff when you know more.

  • Ooh, what an exciting travel year!  I just went to Greece last fall.  Where are you planning to go?

We don't have any plans yet, although we keep talking about going back to Hawaii if we can find a good deal on airfare.

GL with that. Our tickets were about $1k/pp. Huh? Ah, living on the east coast and flying west. And all the west coasters are jealous of our "cheap" Carribean tickets, lol.

Ugh, I know it.  I've seen them as low as $600pp though, so I am not giving up hope.  We might just have to wait til next year instead.  I feel like such a tropical island snob, but I would rather wait a year for a vacation to Hawaii than just go to the Carribean.

Agreed. I'd rather take a cruise and see a bunch of different islands rather than spending a week at just one. But I'm not a sit on the beach for a week type of person. I get bored so easily.

  • Sweet, congrats on the trips!!

Unfortunately we have no vacation plans this year, but it's for a happy reason.  We are closing on our first house next month, and all of our money (& probably vacation time) will be going into getting it set up.

Congrats on the house and enjoy setting it up!  The year we bought our house was the year we did a North Conway, NH "trip" Smile

  • Sounds like everyone has awesome plans!

Rock- I'm so glad you're getting to take your Greece trip. I know you've wanted to for awhile!

We're going to St. Kitts in about a month for 4 days. And we're doing a 10 day road trip from Seattle to San Fran in the fall. I'm so excited for both!

That sounds like fun, I hear that's such a beautiful area!  Are you planning on just winging the trip or will you plan out what places you'll visit beforehand?

  • I'm so jealous of some of your big trips! :) We're going away for a long weekend in May because DH has a big deadline and can only get 2 days off. We're thinking of going up to Canada since the only place we've been is Niagara Falls. I won't get ANY time off from June to December but DH will have a lot of vacation time built up by then so we're planning to take a 3 week trip after Christmas for our 2nd anniversary. Probably to Central or South America :)
  • wow, you ladies are going exciting places!! I'm jealous.

I'm going to the CT shore in May and again in June (same town, different places), DC for a meeting in July, and from DC we're flying to SD to join my parents at dad's college reunion, and after that we'll visit my family in SD. And then drive back. I'm looking forward to it, but DH is scared to death of a 3 day drive, he can't fathom it. I grew up doing that every summer, so I think nothing of it, just pack a TON of knitting projects.?

At the end of September we're going to Disney World for a long weekend.

  • Everyone's vacations sound like so much fun.  Our last big vacation was Disney World last January with a bunch of friends.

Now all vacation plans are on hold due to the baby coming.  It's not hugely exciting (world travel wise anyway) but in August we are heading back home to VA for my brothers wedding.  It will quite the daring adventure with a 1 month old.

  • MrsT- you will LOVE it!  I have been a couple of times, and can't wait to go again! Rome and Florence are my favorite, be sure to eat lots of gelato :)

  • I'm so jealous of everyone's trips! Dh and I haven't talked about taking any vacations this year although I'm sure each of us will end up taking a trip back home. Our problem is we don't trust anyone with our dog.

Aww, thanks for remembering, smal!  Or maybe I just talk about the same things over and over again Stick out tongue  And St. Kitts sounds awesome!  I'm so glad I did this poll; it's cool hearing about where everyone's going.

If you want any SF recs, just let me know.  Unsolicited tip #1: Call it "SF," "San Francisco," or "the city." Do NOT call it "San Fran" or "Frisco" around any locals!

  • Everyone's vacations sound great!

I just got back from a weekend in Vegas.

I am renting a house in Rockland, ME with DH, SIL, and BIL for a week in July.  I am looking forward to the relaxing vacation.  We will take a day trip to Acadia to do some hiking, but other than that we will a lot of relaxing.

We were hoping to go to France in September for our 1 yr anniversary, but don't think it's going to happen.  Maybe in May of next year.  We may do a quick trip to Jackson, NH, or go to Myrtle Beach for a couple nights if we can score cheap flights (BF lives there).

Thanks!  That's a good idea, we should plan out a local, affordable trip to keep our sanity.  We tend to wait WAY too long between trips, but I think that it's b/c we think that it has to be something 'big.'

I always find it interesting what terms are local vs terms that outsiders use for a particular area.  When I lived in Manhattan, I always found it funny when tourists said "NYC" b/c no locals would ever use that term outside of maybe writing it.  Locals just refer to the specific borough or neighborhood, or say 'The City.'

Those were my favorites, too.  Enjoy, and yes, have plenty of gelato b/c you'll never find the same quality anywhere else!

Yeah, I totally get that which is why I called it a "trip" Smile  But this is the perfect area to take smaller get-aways and it's fun exploring your own backyard.  We haven't had the time or budget to take big trips recently so in addition to North Conway, we've done the Cape and Bar Harbor.  Definitely think about it--there are some great B&Bs in the New England area!
