Anyone else?

Anyone else trying to buy a home now?  We just started, and man I am so scared.  Mainly just because I have not idea what I'm doing and neither does my husband.  Just wanted to vent.  Hopefully this won't be as bad as I envision it being...

Re: Anyone else?

  • H and I just bought our first house in November... kind of on a whim.  I know it's hard, but don't stress out.  Stressing out just makes the entire process just so much more difficult.  The first thing that you need to do is sit down with your Hubby and figure out your max monthly payment and what you'd really be comfortable with paying each month.  Next, go to a bank/credit union and get pre-approved.  You don't necessarily need to go to multiple places to get pre-approved as you just need one letter to show you're really interested.  Then, sit down again with your Hubs and decide your 'must haves' and your 'would be nice' (ie. number of bedrooms, number of baths, etc).  This will help you when you go to look at homes because if it has the ideal number of bedrooms and baths but need cosmetic work, at least it's not the bones of the house.  After you know your 'must haves' then talk to local family and friends about who they'd recommend for a real estate agent.  And make sure that your agent is working for you!  Those are the basic preliminary steps that you should know for buying a house... hopefully that eases some of the "what am I supposed to be doing" type of thing.

Once you start looking at houses, bring a camera to help keep track of houses.  Also bring paper and a pen to take notes as each house starts to blend together.  AND, do not fall in love with houses.  It's hard especially if you see what you like but sometimes the deal falls thru, you get outbid, etc. and it's much easier to move on if you're not emotionally attached.

The buying a home board is also really helpful.  I still spend some time there helping others who are looking to buy a house as it is nerve-wrecking especially as a first time homebuyer.  If you have any more questions just let me know!  HTH!

This has a lot of info about buying a home. I have done a lot of Google searches about first-time homebuyers and financing because I know there are a lot of credits and loans and things especially for first-time homebuyers.

Also, check with any credit counselors in your area as they will have a lot of information on home buying and where to find money for it.

  • Thanks so much, both of you!  When you break it down like that, it makes it seem more do-able.  We have an appointment for preapproval tomorrow and hopefully we'll get onto finding a good place!
  • Hi..we are on this now but just started!  Everyone gave such helpful advice...thanks
