Booze Laws

Sara's post earlier this week got me thinking. Since it's Friday, what are the booze laws like in your state?

Re: Booze Laws

  • I think in MO the alcohol laws go by county.  In St. Louis County the bars close and alcohol can no longer be sold after 1:30 a.m., in St. Louis City they can go until 3:00 a.m.  We can buy alcohol/liquor pretty much anywhere that decides to sell it.  This includes liquor stores, grocery stores, gas stations, convenience stores, and some pharmacies like Walgreens and CVS.

Also, while double-checking on the times I listed above, I found that Wikipedia has an entry on alcohol laws in all 50 states.  Apparently MO is pretty permissive.

  • I didn't see Sara's post unless it was the one on The Bump. Great question though! All bars close at 2am. In almost all counties alcohol is sold in liquor stores but each county has different laws. Most counties allow liquor stores to be open til 2am/7 days a week. Most stores close at 11 but you can find some open late or some bars have small liquor stores in them. Baltimore county doesn't allow liquor stores to be open on Sundays but the county that the beach is in has beer/wine in gas stations and grocery stores and the liquor stores are government run. Sorry for the bad grammar, posting from my phone. I'm soooo jealous of you who can buy your booze in Sam's Club.
  • I went to college in St. Louis and I remember on Saturday nights people would drive to Illinois after a certain time (can't remember now if it was 9 pm or 12 am) because you could still buy booze there.  Seems like there was a lot of strip clubs the guys would go to also.
  • I have no idea what the laws are in Cali, except it seems like it can be sold almost anytime, anywhere.  Krissie, you'll have to help out with that one.   In Texas, grocery stores and gas stations can sell wine and beer.  For hard liquor you have to go to a "liquor store" and you can get everything there.  Bars close at 2 am and no hard liquor sales on Sundays. No beer and wine sales until noon on Sundays also.

I think some counties have different laws too.  When I first moved to Dallas County, at bars and restaurants you either had to be a member or have a Uni card.  I never was either, I guess I was always with someone who was.  Seems like some of those places swiped your drivers license at the door too.   I never really understood what was up with that.

Anybody know/understand the Uni Card concept?

This is so awesome!  You can get huge bottles of booze at Costco for really good prices.

  • No alcohol sold after 9pm minus restaurants and bars...meaning you can't go to a liquor store and buy after 9pm.  No liquor sales AT ALL on Sunday...again...minus restaurants and bars.
  • In WI, there are certain cities that you can't buy alcohol after 9 pm. But, you can drink as a minor if you are with a parent. Whenever my parents came to visit we would go to the bars and get a drink. :)

In IN, you can't buy alcohol on Sundays.

In CA, I haven't come across any restrictions.

Shannon, which university did you go to?  Wash U. or SLU maybe?

And yes, the East Side is pretty crazy.  Washington Park and Sauget (both have all of the strip clubs) stay open and serve 24/7.  Maybe not Sundays, but most of the time it's 24 hours.  It's pretty rough over there so unless you are at one of the "reputable" strip clubs, you don't want to head there for your liquor run.

This. Bars do have to close at 2am, but that's about it.

SLU.  And it was soooo easy to get into the bars near campus with crappy fake IDs.  Everyonce in awhile there was a crack down, but that usually blew over pretty quick.

Haha!  Yes, sometimes I think the bouncers are just concerned with packing in as many people as possible.  Although, one time DH and I went to the bar at the Moolah (the coolest theater ever!) and they would not accept that his ID was real.  I think he even had DH show other forms of ID.  We got in eventually, but I wondered how many college kids had better fakes than DH's real ID.  :)

  • I don't know what our exact laws are in CA. I know between 2am & 6am, you can't buy anything because in college I spent many a night rushing to make it to the store by 2 or waiting in despiration for 6 am to arrive to re-up because we had ran out. There are no limits on where or how much booze you can buy.

  • Bars close at 2am. Alcohol is sold in liquor stores and grocery stores(Sam's Club included). Recently Target has been selling it too. The thing that sucks is you can't buy alcohol after 9pm.

  • In MN you can only buy at a liquor store unless you want 3.2 beer. I am not sure what time they sell to, 10 maybe, but are closed on Sundays. Also I think bars can stay open as long as they are willing, but can't serve after "last call." You can tell I moved her after college, since I don't really know all the laws, lol.

  • You can only buy liquor and wine at Liquor stores, AKA state stores.  They are mostly open from 11 AM- 9 PM, with a select few open until 10 on Saturday nights.  Here is an example schedule of the liquor store close to me:

    Sunday closed

    Monday, Tuesday 11 AM- 7PM

    Wednesday-Saturday 11 AM - 9 PM

About 5 years ago, they decided to let some liquor stores be open on Sundays noon- 5PM.  There is only one that I know of in my area.

You can only buy cases (or greater) or beer at beer distrubutors.  At these stores, you can't buy 6 packs, etc, just cases or greater.  These stores are generally open 11 AM- 9 or 10 PM M-Sat and noon-5 on Sundays.

You can buy 6 packs at bars and select places that have liquor licenses.  It is a 2 pack per person limit.  You can't buy liquor or wine though, only 6 packs.  Bars are generally open from 11 AM- 2 AM.  Some bars open at 7 AM, but I forget what the rule is that allows them to open at 7 AM.  I know that bars and restaurants are no allowed to serve alcohol between the hours of 2 AM and 7 AM.

There are also after hours bars and clubs, but these are considered "private"  membership of some sort.  They can serve alcohol until 3 AM, but they need a special license for this.  There are not many of these establishments.

Basically, PA is crappy state for alcohol.  As all of you know, I'm a big wine drinker.  You can't have alcohol shipped into PA from another state.  I always wanted to join a wine club and you can't.  There isn't an option to ship into PA.  I did finally join a wine club last year, but it's through a local (PA) winery.  That is allowed.

  • In TN you can't buy liquor on sundays, bars close at 3 am and you can't buy beer and liquor at the same place.  Beer you can get at gas stations and grocery stores, and you have to go to a liquor store to get wine or liquor
