Apartment Hunting Frustrations

Hey ladies!  I just have had a rough day looking for apartments and wanted to vent/share.

We currently live in my little 1 bedroom apt...and need more space.  Plus, DH is commuting over an hour now, so we wanted to move a little closer south so he didn't have to drive so far.

Plusses: we live in a college town...lots of apartment option.

Minuses- there are no big towns between where we live and where DH works...so nothing really inbetween.

I found a few places inbetween, but one is almost too big for us (we don't need 1500 square feet right now!), one is out of our price range, and the perfect one (perfect price, size, location) was rented out from under us today!  Literally, I had an appt to go see it, and got a call not to come because it was leased.

UGH!  I don't know what we will do! Anyone else having issues with their home/apartment?

Re: Apartment Hunting Frustrations

  • Are you planning on only staying in this apartment for one year?  If so, then I do agree that 1500 feet may be too big.  But if you're planning on staying in it any longer than one year then 1500 sq feet really isn't that big once you're all moved in.  The house we bought is currently somewhere around 1650 sq. feet and we're currently looking to finish our basement just to give us some more room (and we've only been living in the house for about 5 months).

Good luck with the searching and remember, something perfect for you and your hubby will show up.

  • I'll play devil's advocate here....

I had my own 2br/2ba condo and lived alone in the 1050sqft with backyard and garage.  After meeting H and realizing I wanted to be closer than an hour, I moved in with him (not the original plan, but the one that we ended up with).  Going from alone to with someone in a smaller space (800sqft) was really a challenge for me.

If you do go for the larger dwelling space, from my experience anyway, it will be a challenge to move into something smaller in the future.

I do agree with Misa about the length of time you're planning to live there.  If you can see yourself in that area and apartment for a really long time, going bigger will allow you to spread out a bit.

  • We just moved from 680sqft to 1500sqft and it is amazing! Misa brought up a good point, how long do you plan on renting?

We live right by a University in a large city. It is difficult to find a decent place in a good neighborhood for a reasonable price. We did a lot of reserach on where we wanted to move to and what at what price. Our old place was in a great location but it was super busy/loud, very small and expensive. We found our current place via word of mouth, we signed our lease two months before the current renters even moved out and the owner had, had several people contact her about the place and it wasn't even listed anywhere.

Does the University in your area have a housing website with local listings? April/May is move out season here as all of the students are taking off for the summer, hopefully this will open up lots of options for you! It can be a PITA but you will find the right place for you guys! GL

  • I agree with Misa! If you are planning on living in the apartment for more than a year, I say take the 1500 sq ft one. Once you and your DH are all moved in, you'll soon realize that 1500 sq ft really isn't as big as you think it is, soon you'll be wanting more! GL!
