ideas for soft food/bland food diets? bed rest?

hi hi hi!

what do you guys eat when you are on a bland food diet OR a soft food diet?

i know those can be 2 different things with different foods.  i've googled them both, but i wanted to see what you ladies used as your staples so i can think of more ideas =) i don't want to be bored eating the same thigns over and over again and i want to make sure i get all my nutrients =) i don't like yogurt or oatmeal... =/

 my thoughts:

bland food: crackers, won ton soup, jello

soft foods: pudding, rice porridge (lugaw/arroz caldo), smashed bananas?

on a slightly related topic, if anyone has been on bed rest, what do you do?!?! i know, i know, the whole point of bed rest is to REST. but i can see it becoming somewhat boring. sooo..  does anyone have recs for books to read (brainless yet entertaining... like a beach read), activities to do while on bedrest? i don't necessarily want to be glued to the tv.

 tia! =)

Re: ideas for soft food/bland food diets? bed rest?

  • Kinnnniiiiii!  Oh wait, this isn't FB so I can call you Jennnnn!!! Smile

Are you OK?  I hope so...

I've never been on bed rest nor had to go on a soft/bland food diet so I can't say for sure but when I'm sick I always have rice porridge, apple sauce, soft steamed veggies, consomme, light miso soup (with or without tofu) etc.  Maybe yogurt?

For reading (this was a while ago), I read a lot of the Anne Rice Vampire series, and the Witch series.  They are in abundance at used bookstores so you could pick up the whole series for like, $20.

I picked up a bunch of Clive Cussler-esque books at a used bookstore for a trip, and they sure help the time go by!

Do you crotchet or knit?  Would you want to start?

Anyway, hope you are well.  Take care!! Left Hug

  • Re: Wonton soup.  If it's got pork in it, you might want to avoid it.  I read that pork takes like 5 hours to fully digest.  Again, I'm not 100% sure about this, but just a thought.
  • Are you okay? Hope you're doing okay. You remind me a little of me 7 months ago, when I had hyperemesis =P

Any kind of soup can be kind of bland and soft. I had corn soup and butternut squash soup. Other bland and soft things I can think of are applesauce, bread, rice, mashed potatoes (or yams/sweet potatoes), scrambled eggs. When I could finally eat, I also had this hankering craving for radish cake (from Chinese dim sum), which is soft and yummy.

I was on bedrest for about 2+ months. In the first month, I would mainly sleep because I felt so tired and miserable the whole time. When I was awake and got bored, I'd talk to MH, play my Nintendo DS Lite, listen to my iPod, use my laptop (rarely though, because I'd throw up everytime I'd look at my screen, so I borrowed a projector from my cousin and used that because it was less nauseous to look at the projection of my laptop screen on the wall). After we got the projector, I also watched movies on the wall from bed. By the 2nd month, I could keep my head up more without having to vomit 24/7, but I was still bedridden and I got too bored, so I started to work from home using the projector and just have the wireless keyboard on my lap (the laptop would create too much pressure on my tummy and make me sick again). It worked out pretty well and whenever I felt too sick, I'd just put the keyboard down and sleep. I also read my Pregnancy magazine sometimes, but I'm not an avid reader so I didn't read any books, although I think that would be a great idea if you like reading.

I hope you're doing okay and/or feel better soon!

  • I also was thinking about butternut squash soup or mashed potatoes/mashed sweet potatoes.

When I was sick a few years back and laid up in bed for a week, I started reading the Harry Potter books.  Before that I thought they were probably stupid, but a friend had given me a copy of the first one.  I read it thinking, like you, that I needed brainless but entertaining.  I loved it so much that I mad my boyfriend at the time go out and get me the next three books!  With seven books, they would keep you entertained for several weeks, if needed.

What is asian rice porridge soup with lots of ginger? I love ginger! Do you have a recipe you can share?

Kini - I know you said you don't like yogurt... but... it is so good for you. Can you make yourself eat some organic yogurt? The yogurt culture helps with overall health and especially gastrointestinal health. Wallaby and Stonyfield Farms are my favorites. I agree with the others who said applesauce. Organic brown rice is pretty bland. What about pineapple? It's on the list of the world's healthiest foods. If you want something yummy, that won't make you sick (but isn't especially healthy) get some Ben and Jerry's. Big Smile

  • Mashed potatoes. *drool*

I've been on modified bed rest a couple times (not the strict "don't get out of bed for ANYTHING" version, but the one where it's strongly recommended that you stay off your feet and keep lying down as much as possible), and books and the internet were my saviors. Oh, and crossword puzzles, because I'm a big ole nerd. Stick out tongue

  • I hope you are ok.

Everyone else gave you great suggestions.  The only new suggestion I can come up with: My g'ma would always make me a tomato soup with either rice or elbow pasta in it when I was sick.

When I was working through minor morning sickness I loved applesauce and yogurt.

As for what to do.... I love to read so when I was on slight bedrest (lay on one side as much as possible) during the end of my pregnancy I read a lot but yeah... I was bored.  I don't usually watch much tv, but I did during those couple of weeks, when infomercial items started sounding like things I needed I knew I was in trouble, haha!

I did use the time to actually catch up on printing photos.  I really didn't have very many PRINTED photos of DH and I so I added lots to my costco photo account and had him pick them up and I put them in an old fashioned album.  That was fun.

My g'ma would come visit me too and we would browse the sunday sales and read cookbooks.

  • Hi hi hi!Chika, you can say jenn on fb =) it's just for folks I used to go to school with and/or work stuff.... Heheall great suggestions from everyone!!!!I partially dislocated my jaw yesterday eating French fries! Haha what a dork I am!!!!! So it's difficult to chew... Hahaha I've been eating soft carrots, egg flower soup, bananas with pudding, tuna sandwich.... I love the tomato soup ideas! And I think I can stomach yogurt if I eat a liitle at a time... Hehere the bedrest. I didn't post anything, but it's just a routine procedure. I have to be on bedrest for 2 days. I know it's not long, but i don't want to be bored....I love the photo ideas!!!
