Baby Carriers -- Which do you use?

I know Sarah has a BabyHawk. Christine got one too? Renee, Sarah, Lori and I have a Moby (or DIY Moby). What else do folks use? Recommend?

I also have a Belle Carrier, which I love. DH prefers the Bjorn (ick). But both are only for the front, both FFO and facing in. I'd like to get a carrier that can be used to carry Alexa on our back also...

Has anyone tried the Beco Butterfly? I heard they are coming out with a new Beco, the Gemini, that will also have a FFO option...

And, who all has the Ergo? I tried one on today and really liked it. It was so snug on my hips that I carried all her weight there, it was awesome!

Anyone have (or have tried) an Angelpack, Boba, Kozy, Pikklo, Olives and Applesauce, Lilibaby?

TIA for your opinions, recommendations!

Re: Baby Carriers -- Which do you use?

  • hi hi hi malia =)

if you ask my sister, her preference for baby carriers back when her 2 kids were small was me! hahahahah

but your sisters don't live nearby, so that's not an option... heheheh

my 2 gfs love the ergo baby carrier. they don't know each other, but they swear by it. i haven't seen it yet though. ?

  • I want to get a Vanatai Wrap (Koira) for summer since it's hot here.  Then, in the Fall I hope to get a Storchenwiege (Anna).  I like wraps for my body type...less pressure points and lots of versatility to grow with baby.

I do want to get a SSC like a Moby...I think J would prefer it to a wrap now that Libby is bigger.

  • The BabyHawk can be used for back carries.  So can the Moby, right?

We use all of our carriers for different things.  I love the BabyHawk and use it for stuff like shopping or just around the house.  We use the Ergo for walking outside because it has the shade to cover her head.  And we still use the Moby at home, too, sometimes.  B had her facing out in it for the first time yesterday and she seemed to really like it.

The only thing I don't like about the Ergo is that it's a little bulky and not comfortable to sit in.  But I love that it's daddy friendly.

  • I only got the Ergo and I still have yet to use it with a baby but I like it so far from just putting it on/feeling it/etc. I heard great things about it--everyone I know who has one loves and swears by it. My husband tried it on too and he likes it. I guess the real test will come when we're actually carrying the baby in it, but that won't be until another month or so =)

  • I don't have any of the above yet, but based on friend's recommendations, we're registered for a moby, and ergo, and a maya.

  • I have the moby, babyhawk, Bjorn, ergo and another one from a local designer.  So far, I enjoy the ergo better.  The babyhawk cuts into Ashton's fat thighs.
  • I am looking into getting an Ergo Sport for J and found a cheaply priced Scootababy that I might get and try.

The Attachment Parenting Board (The Bump) has many babywearing mamas... you might post this over there for more feedback...

  • I have a Belle and a Bjorn too, but don't use them anymore. Just bought the new generation Ergo, so I'm excited to try it out with my big girl! There aren't any baby wearing groups on Kauai that I'm aware of, and wish so much that there were more resources here. It's nice to have this board where I hear of all kinds of baby things I probably never would have otherwise.
  • we have a moby, maya, ergo, and angelpack.

i think it depends on the shape/frame of the parent as well as the baby.

i like the moby but it's a pain to put on b/c it's so long... so i put it on before leaving so when we get to where we're going then i slip her in it. i've heard from mamas in the DFW babywearing group that as baby gets bigger, that the fabric can stretch too much though so woven wraps are better. i can also see it getting very hot in the summer using it here :)

the maya i like but on my small frame it hurts my shoulders. i've tried it on a few times but i think i am just going to sell it.

the ergo i tried on at the babywearing mtg and found it too bulky for my liking but we did get one for DH.  he still needs to try it on and if he doesn't like it then we'll just sell it.

the angelpack i also tried on at the babywearing mtg and loved it. it seems to fit my small frame well and i love that it's reversible...so i can have a cute print when i am using it and if needed, we can reverse it to the solid side so DH can use it.  he still has to try it on though, so we'll see.  it also has a sleeping hood which is nice.

i think since you are in DC the easiest thing to do is just go to a babywearing mtg to try on different carriers... i did a quick glance on the forums at babywearer.com and it looks like they do have groups in the surrounding DC area so you might want to check it out :)

I forgot that I also have the Maya Wrap....that is okay. I felt the weight was too much on one side.

  • I have a moby, linen ring sling (sleeping baby productions), pouch (serena and lily), and an ergo.

We don't use a removable infant seat, nor is Jack really ready for a stroller very often so we (I) use carries all the time.

I loved the moby when he was brand new but would tie it on before I left the house and then just leave it on as I ran errands which was a little annoying.  I would also use the pouch a lot because it was easier to put on but I didn't really like how low and somewhat unstable he was in the cradle position.  I think by design that sling was just too big/hung down too low.  Now that he's bigger I do the cuddle hold and still use it occasionally since it's so pretty.

I use the ring sling the most these days because it's quick to put on and easy to throw in the diaper bag.  I like that it's adjustable and it's nice because I can loosen it a little when we are out to eat so I can scoot him slightly off to one side.

We have just started to use the ergo, it's going to be great for longer trips out and about.  I can't see myself wearing it around the house b/c when I do that I like to be able to sit down to fold clothes, check email, etc and that isn't super comfy.  Although the couple in front of us at football games last year used an Ergo and I noticed she would slightly loosen it when she sat down, it still safely kept the baby in but allowed her to get the hip straps up a little higher in order to sit most comfortably.

  • I have a Moby (DIY), an Ergo, and two backpacks for hiking (one more lighter than the other).  I got my Ergo because Kai hated the Bjorn my friend let us use. He was also to heavy for the Moby (at least on my back).  I like the moby for the back but to be honest I didnt use it that long and dont use it anymore.  It did serve its purpose and was by far the most comfortable and easiest on the ole back.

I think I got it for around $80, so look for those sales :) I do think it is one of the pieces of baby stuff that really hold their value (just like the BOB stroller).

  • I thought I remembered you posting you had like 8 carriers?  lol

We have Snugli, Moby wrap, Fisher Price carrier, and Ergo. MH makes fun of me when I have any of them on.  Men.  Anyway, he doesn't like the design on the Ergo, so I'm going to try to sell that.  He won't use the others.  I keep the Snugli in the car to use for quick trips if DS is awake and I don't want to get the stroller out, but it hurts my lower back to use it for long periods of time.  The FP one has a lower back support strap, so that's not an issue.  I haven't tried to Ergo yet, but it's weird to me that the one part of the carrier is YOU.  But since MH doesn't like it and I'm gonna try to sell it anyway, I probably won't try it.   I haven't tried any of those other ones though.  Do they have them up at Great Beginnings in Gaithersburg?  Maybe you can try them there?
