Styling hair?!? Wdyd

What is your daily style routine and products? I'm trying to get better at experimenti and not sure where to start. I have med-long length some layers and very thick hair. I typically blowdry it and the chi it to keep it from being a frizz ball. I'd love to do more with the big barrel curling iron but that's where I get lost with products... Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Sad part of it all is my moms a hairstylist ... Just a little too old school for any help or my taste :(

  • If you are curious about products, you might go to the Beauty Store or to Ulta and ask them about different options. I have straight hair and am curl-inept, so sorry I can't help more.

  • I'm with Mimi- I have straight, baby-fine hair.  I use buckets of hairspray to pretend volume.

The only product I can recommend is Tresemme heat protector spray before you blowdry/ straighten.  It has definitely minimized the damage to my hair.

It seems like awhile back (I don't remember if it was on the board or in her blog) GoFurr was recommending a  hair product for soft curls.  It would be nice if you could choose between curls or straight hair depending on the day.

Also, YouTube has a gajillion beauty bloggers.   Maybe a search could get you something there?

  • I also have very fine hair that's nothing like yours it sounds, but I would recommend experimenting with your Chi.  I'm a big fan of curling with the Chi iron (it's not just for straightening!)  What I like about it is you can create soft curls or gentle waves without having to use a barrel curling iron, which (IMO) generally makes people look like they have prom hair if they don't use it correctly.  The curls are just too "perfect" with a curling iron.

I'm sure you could youtube as FCB said, and find some instructions on how to curl using a chi.  If your hair is really thick, it will probably take a while to style that way, however - so just prepare yourself. :)

Something that works well for people with thick hair that are trying to style it without it ending up looking like a puff ball is to do it in very small sections. Literally start with the section at the nape of your neck and pin the rest up, then gradually let down small sections and dry those until you've done your whole head.  Dry it with a diffuser on your blowdryer for springy curls, or for softness and straightening, use a concentrator attachment and a large round natural bristle brush.

I use Redken products, and they're great - they've got a whole line of heat styling products.  For your hair, I'd probably use some kind of heat protecting balm as well as maybe a straightening spray.

  • thanks ladies... hadnt thought about ulta or beauty store. Ill run by there this week. CJ- regardless if I use my chi or my curling iron it last about 2-3 hrs and then the weight of my hair pulls them out. But I have noticed that the chi does keep it longer then the other.

    Thanks again ladies! :)

  • Have you had your hair thinned out? I might be using the wrong term, but my sister has something done that actually thins her hair out. To someone like me that sounds like the worst idea in the history of the world, but ...Smile

My sister has hair like yours, it sounds like. SUPER SUPER thick. Hers is naturally wavy, so she straightens it every day. Anywho, she says it helps her so much in both being able to hold a style AND how long it takes her to style it.

Also, she looks super cute with bangs because she has a ton of hair. Have you thought about bangs?
