why are there no engineering jobs??
my brother is super smart and has a degree in electrical engineering - now has been unemployed since Sept "09. He is having zero luck and would be willing to relocate from LA to Austin if there were any possibities. Does anyone know someone that knows someone? I would love for him to be here.. Plus, he has a 9 month old baby and I can't imagine unemployment checks give you much liberty.
Re: why are there no engineering jobs??
I might have a lead for him, if he'd be willing to do some software stuff (not a prereq, but that's what most of the company does). he'd also need to be able to get a security clearance once he's hired (they pay for it, but it's a long process and he probably couldn't be the son-in-law of Bin Laden).
email me if you want more info: tiffany at tiffanycrossphoto.com
I'm so sorry. When I left a big semiconductor company a couple of years ago, they weren't hiring in the states any more. Lately, several of my friends have reported similar news with their companies.
We've had a few friends relocate to Dallas/Ft. Worth for jobs at Texas Instruments and other companies up there. I know it's not Austin, but maybe he could try that area.
I feel your (and his! and especially his wife's!) pain.
DH graduated with his undergrad in electrical engineering in 07, then his masters in EE in 09 and was unemployed from graduation until January 2010. He was looking and applying for jobs for a full year. It was awful, painful, and very stressful (and we don't have a baby).
Honestly, everyone kept telling him that it was "normal" to have to wait that long. He ended up getting hired on at a great company (in austin) and he's pretty content now. He probably could have gotten a job in Colorado - but I was really set on living here.
He should check out Folsom, CA - I know they've got a lot more jobs open than here. Also Colorado and Oregan. Hopefully something will come up soon for him - it takes a lot of patience.
We were really dumb to assume he would get a dream job immediaely out of his masters program... but we're so thankful now.
Good luck to your brother!
"The House We Built."
A journey of building the dream.
I'm sure he might have already done this - but if not have him search for "manufacturing engineer" or "test engineer" in his job searches.
Also, if he's not part of any industry related networking groups (IEEE), TSPE, etc I would recommend looking at these organizations b/c they often have internal job postings if you are members (at least they do for industrial engineers!).
I dont know of any jobs off hand currently available, but I know my friend was looking a few months back in Austin and was able to find a new one through networking (he's an EE). Try 3M, Freescale, NI, and possibly even through one of the temp agencies as a technical contractor.
I can honestly say it's not going to be much easier for him to find a job here than anywhere else. My husband and his friends are all computer engineers and they're all pretty much doing the jobs of 4 people because their companies have downsized so much and are still deep in hiring freezes.
Best of luck to him and his family, I hope something pops up really soon for him.
Sometimes I pin stuff
this, for sure.
has he looked in houston? it's definitely not austin, but it's closer than LA.
I can't really speak to how booming the market is, but if he'd consider austin, could he be willing to relocate to DC? The Federal Government and defense contractors are hiring.
This is a little disheartening since we are relocating from DC to Austin next year and my DH is an electrical engineer.
